Top 5 Acne Myths

It seems like everyone is an expert when it comes to telling you what causes acne. The word "myth" is defined by dictionary.com as "an unproved or false collective belief...", and boy are there many of those when it comes to acne.

See if you have been fooled into believing that your acne is caused by one of the following 5 acne myths.

1. Chocolate, Pizza, French Fries

While acne is not just a problem for teens, teens do tend to consume a lot of the foods thought by many to cause acne. And because kids can sometimes be mean, those with acne have a tendency to be picked on when eating these so-called "acne foods". I'm happy to let you know that your acne is not caused by what you eat. While you don't want to only eat fried or greasy foods, feel free to have that piece of pizza or occasional candy bar with the peace of mind that foods do not cause acne.

2. You Don't Wash Your Face Enough

While it is important for everyone to take good care of their skin, and that includes washing it twice a day, those without acne may think that those with acne don't wash their face enough. This is false thinking. Acne comes from far below the skin's surface. Washing your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser is needed, but don't go overboard with harsh exfoliators and scrubs. These will only spread bacteria causing future breakouts. Be glad to know that if you're washing your face in the morning and before bed, you're doing all the right steps. If mid-day oil is a problem, buy some oil-blotting sheets and stick them in your bag so they're handy.

3. Acne is Only A Problem For Teens

How I wish I could tell you this is true for everyone. The fact of the matter is that most of the acne problems do affect teens and young adults, but adult acne is also a common occurrence. You have no idea how many times I hear, "Who knew I'd still have to deal with acne in my 30's!".

While those adults who deal with acne don't have it nearly as bad as they did when they were teens, acne can still rear it's ugly head at any time. If you're dealing with acne in your late 20's or 30's, you probably only deal with the occasional few breakouts. If you have more then that, it's time to go to the Dermatologist. There is medicine to treat acne; you don't have to suffer any longer.

4. Nothing Will Get Rid of Acne

If you're dealing with acne and you truly believe this, I've got good news for you. Your acne is treatable if you find the right products and medicines. I highly recommend a visit to a dermatologist so your skin can be evaluated. Why waste money on over the counter products that may or may not work for you. Go to the expert and let them decide what will work for your skin.

You may need a new skin care regime, antibiotics or even stronger prescriptions to scare your acne away, but you'll never know if you don't go. Don't be embarrassed; it's what they do!

5. Laying in the Sun Will Make Your Acne Go Away

Not only is this false, it's a sure fire way to start the aging process early in life. Did you know that 90% of premature aging is caused by unprotected sun exposure? Tan skin may hide redness from acne, but it doesn't do anything to make your acne go away.

Before you hit the beach, grab your sunblock and apply it at least every 2 hours. You don't want to look like you're a decade older than you really are in another 5 years.
