My Interview on About.com’s Beauty Site

I've picked a lot of people's brain in the hair removal industry from waxing and sugaring experts to founders of companies. Now, I'm on the other side. Julyne Derrick from the very popular Beauty Site here at About.com got down to the nitty gritty asking what she calls "her burning hair removal questions." Julyne isn't a stranger to this topic by any means, she got professional laser hair removal on her legs and bikini, but unfortunately, still has to shave and wax.

We talk about my thoughts on laser hair removal, the Brazilian, women's battle with chin hair, beauty tips and why I try to use natural makeup and skincare products. Check out my interview with Julyne.

Bruising from Waxing

While bruising from waxing most commonly happens when taking out coarse hair, like in the bikini area, but can show up in other zones.

Prevent Bruising from Waxing:

If you’re waxing at home, make sure to hold skin very taut. Ask for someone’s help if you’re having a problem getting skin taut and waxing at the same time. Be sure you’re using the right thickness of wax on hair, otherwise the extra force to remove the excess wax can cause the bruising.

If you don’t ‘bruise easy’ but a professional leaves your black and blue time and again, then it might be time to seek out another technician.

Other issues from waxing like ingrown hairs, pain, bumps, pimples and more can also occur.

Topical Botox Available by 2013

If you read the interview that I did with Dr. Schultz about getting rid of and preventing crows feet, you saw that topical Botulinum toxin (aka: Botox) is on the horizon. Dr. Schultz said that they expect it to be available in 2013, just a year away.

When I asked Dr. Schultz if the results were the same as the injectable Botulinum toxin, he said exactly. He said he's seen the results with his own eyes.? He said it will take about 30 minutes in the office and last 3 to 4 months. Wow!

I have a friend who told me that she had Botox injections in her forehead and the needle was so tiny that there wasn't any pain, but whenever I see people having the injection done of TV, it looks so painful.? I love the idea of topical Botulinum toxin.? I told Dr. Schultz that topical was something I could sign up for!

What about you? Would you be more willing to try Botox if it was a simple gel that was applied to the skin's surface by a dermatologist? Take our poll below. And if you've had injectable Botulinum toxin, share your experience with us.

I Don't Like My Feet!

Answer:

A pedicure is one of my all time favorite treats. Going all the way back to beauty school, I never minded getting or giving them (OK, getting them was way better than giving them). But it seems so many people I know have never had one because of some silly reason such as they think their feet are ugly. If that is what is holding you back, it's time to adjust your thinking.

They say that the average person walks the equivalent of four times around the world in their lifetime. Don't you think your feet deserve a little pampering? No one thinks they have pretty feet; heck, I know mine are far from pretty, but that's not going to stop me from going to get a pedicure. Let me walk you through the treatment so you can make that first phone call. I promise you'll thank me for it when you're done.

When you first get to your appointment, you'll take off your socks and shoes; roll up your pants and start soaking your feet in a bubbling foot tub. Make sure that you grab some magazines before you start soaking. Most of the time, you get to relax in a massaging chair. Look for the massage remote; they may forget to tell you about it. I always hope for a customer to walk in or the phone to ring so I can sit and soak as long as possible (I'm shameless). Once your nail technician is ready to begin, they'll sit in front of you on a stool taking one foot at a time to clean, trim and file the nails into a nice shape. They will also push down and possibly trim your cuticles. If you are uncomfortable with this, just let them know. While they are working on one foot, the other will enjoy the soak and bubbly massage.

After your nails are trimmed and your cuticles have been cleaned up, you'll be ready to have your feet exfoliated. Sometimes all they need is a foot file, but other times they use electrical files. Don't be scared, and don't feel funny. I'm a proud owner of feet that need the electrical file, it's normal, and they don't think anything of it. Using a foot scrub, they will work on the calloused areas of your feet as well as do a general exfoliation of your entire foot. An exfoliator is a cream with bits in it to slough off the dead skin cells revealing softer skin. Again, while one foot is being exfoliated, you'll be soaking the other.

When both feet are smooth as can be, you'll get the best part of all, a foot and leg massage. The technician will apply a thick moisturizer and give you a fantastic foot and leg massage (this is not the time to hope for a customer or a phone call).

After you have had both feet dried and massaged, it's time to clean the nails again for the polish. You usually pick the polish before you even sit down, and you'll have probably 100 to choose from. Go daring on your toes; anything goes. Your technician will put little toe separators on your feet and paint a clear coat, two colored coats and a top clear coat. You'll most likely then be given cheap little flip-flops so you can walk over to the drying table. There are UV lights under this table where you can sit for about ten minutes to help your nails harden. Make sure you bring sandals or flip-flops to wear home; nails take a long time to become dent resistant.

Don't miss out on one of life most inexpensive treats. Everyone deserves a pedicure a few times a year. If you are looking for a cheaper option, go to a beauty school. You can score a pedicure for less than half of what you would at a salon. And as a previous cosmetology school student, we've seen all sorts of feet, so there is nothing to worry about.

Best Hair Removal Kits

With so many different hair removal kits on the market today, it can be very confusing trying to decide?what you're going to use to get rid of that winter coat. Since?my assistant Nicole and I?have had?the opportunity to test out loads of products (and we mean a lot!) we wanted to share what worked the best for us and give our top picks with different budgets and methods in mind for men and women.

1. Parissa Wax Strips

parissa wax strips, best wax stripsImage Courtesy PriceGrabber

Nicole's pick

These?wax strips are the best Nicole has?ever tried. Choose from?different sizes and formulas for different parts of the face and body for both men and women.?Simply pull them apart and use- waxing at home?made easy.

They don’t require heat, work quickly because the wax is already attached and are very affordable. Once hairless (for up to six weeks), there’s no messy clean up and hardly any waste.

The only downfall of these strips?is if your hands get a little wet, it?can be?difficult to pull the strip. But it’s nothing a towel can’t handle.

2. Tria Laser at Home

tria laser at homePhoto c Chris Roy

Naomi's pick

This is a real device for performing laser at home approved for permanent hair reduction on your legs, bikini line, underarms, feet, arms, hands, chest, and back. Of course, your skin needs to fall in right tone and it won’t work on hair that’s blonde, red, white or gray.?You’ll also need to use it for a total of eight times every two to four weeks.

Treatments can take a lot of time, especially?if you're working on a large area because?they need to be done both vertically and horizontally?and the device has a?small head (see how Tria laser works). But you’ll be zapping away in the comfort of your own home, and priced at $495, I’m sure save a ton over going to a clinic or spa.

?And the results? Well, it worked great on my bikini line (read review).

3. Bliss Philips Bikini Perfect Deluxe

bliss bikini perfect deluxec Sephora USA, Inc

Nicole's pick

Instead of buying different tools, an epilator, electric razor, and a trimmer?are part of the six attachments to use pretty much anywhere on your body. You won't get the same ultra-smooth shave with the electric razor like with a manual one, but it's pretty close. If you would like the hair gone for weeks at a time, try the epilating attachment.

Although this rechargeable, cordless system is packaged and marketed to women, men will also like it (Nicole's husband sure did). It's waterproof, so?save time and take it with you in the shower (read review).??

Any drawbacks??It doesn’t work well with shaving creams. The bright side is- you save money there!

4. Shobha Sugaring Kit

Shobha sugaring kitCopyrightc 2010 Salon Services, LLC

Naomi’s pick

Sugaring removes the hair from the root like waxing and lasts for weeks, but is known to be much gentler to the skin and hurt less than waxing. This kit (previously called Madhu Mini)?has the same products used at the very popular Shobha salons in New York City.

You’ll get everything you need to sugar at home for about $30,?including the most adorable denim strips that can be washed and re-used. Since it's heated in the microwave, you might need to re-zap the sugar to keep it the right temperature to easily remove the hair. But I think it’s well worth it.

5. Venus Bikini Razor Kit

Nicole’s pick

Here’s a wonderful hair removal kit for an easy, groomed and hair free bikini line with a trimmer, razor and lotion for about $10. The Venus Embrace razor helps you get smooth using five blades.?A separate trimmer has a protective comb that makes grooming easy and neat- no batteries required (read review). It trims to about a quarter of an inch,?the perfect length needed?if you're going to get a bikini?wax.

Also included is a sample of Olay Moisture, a nice and light moisturizer for after the shave. The kit itself if great, but it’s still shaving, which means you'll have to continue forever!

Men Who Shave Their Legs

Many male models shave their legs and other body parts like their chest and back. But not always down totally smooth with a razor. Often they will trim the hair to 1/8 of an inch so that the hair isn’t detectable to the camera, but they don't risk razor side effects like cuts, nicks or razor burn.

Philips Norelco Bodygroom 2030 is a great all around cordless tool that allows you to trim down hair to five different lengths in or out of the shower. Put on another special foil blade attachment and it will shave hair totally down (read review).

No male model wants to come to a shoot with razor bumps or ingrown hairs on their face or body. These bumpfighting products (see list) work for preventing and beating them.

Nose Hair Waxing?

The mere thought of getting your nose hair pulled out from the root may cause a shiver up your spine. But people do like to get their nose waxed because it lasts a long time. The truth is that some salons and spas will do a nose wax, but others won't do this type of waxing.

How is it done? For a full nose wax, hard wax is applied to the tip of a small wooden applicator in the shape of a ball and allowed to cool for some time. Then the tech will place the applicator inside the nostril, not going any farther than the ball of the nose. After a couple of minutes the applicator is pulled out. People have said it doesn't hurt that much, and is so much less painful than pulling nose hair out with tweezers. Ouch!

Personally, I wouldn't get this done. I don't want to be waxed anywhere inside the body. Secondly, nose hair acts as an air filter. In this day and age, I can't imagine weakening this natural filter. You most definitely should not get a nose wax if you have asthma or are a smoker. Also, it isn't safe to wax if you have a nose piercing.

If you do want a nose wax, please don't do this on yourself! Choose a reputable salon or spa and someone that is experienced and skilled in waxing.

But rather than just let the hair poke out, in my opinion, the safest way is to trim them with nose hair clippers that have a round head (compare prices).

How to Get Rid of Crows Feet

As a 30-something, crows feet are starting to take hold of my eyes. From the emails that have been coming in, I know I'm not alone. I was very excited to speak with Dr. Schultz about this common problem.

I am a big fan of Dr. Neal Schultz and all of his work on DermTV.com. If you're not familiar with him yet, you'll have to take some time to read and watch some of his skin care advice tips. He has his own Dermatology practice in NYC and he's also the founder of BeautyRX skin care.

Dr. Schultz is a wealth of information on crows feet - both in preventing and reducing.

Are all lines on the sides of the eyes considered crows feet?

The most important thing to differentiate are smile lines and crows feet. When you smile, you’ll see small lines going from the corners of your eyes out toward your temple. When you stop smiling, if the lines go away, those are simply smile lines. If the lines stay, those are crows feet.

Typically, when do men and women start showing signs of crows feet?

The age is highly variable, but we see many people in their mid-30’s starting to see small lines that don’t go away. But people could fall in this category in their twenties or not until their forties, but mid-30’s is an average age.

What are the biggest crows feet instigators?

The three S’s: Smiling, Squinting and Sleeping, listed in the order of problem-causing. Smiling is the biggest instigator of crows feet, then squinting, then sleeping.

To get an idea of how wrinkles form, picture a paperclip. When you bend that paperclip back and forth and back and forth, after a while, the paperclip will break. This is the same with your skin. Repetitive motions that cause creases in your skin will break the collagen and elastic fibers in your skin and cause wrinkles anywhere on the face, not just around the eyes.

Smiling: Smiling is a repetitive movement and chances are good you smile many times every day. Everyone smiles a bit different, but those people who use the muscles next to their eyes when they smile will obviously get crows feet earlier than people who don’t.

Squinting: You should wear sunglasses every single day, all year round. This is because squinting from the sun is a repetitive movement and just like that paper clip analogy, continuous squinting causes the collagen and elastic fibers to break down and wrinkles to form.

Sleeping: The most ideal way to sleep to avoid wrinkles is on your back and using one of the u-shaped travel pillows. This is obviously not something that most people can do, so using a silk pillow case might be something that can help.

Here’s why. When you wake up, do you notice sleep lines? Sometimes your skin gets pulled on the pillow case when you are sleeping and that causes creases in your skin. When you use a silk pillow case, your skin is able to slide easier and won’t get tugged or pulled by the pillow case.

What do you recommend for people who don’t yet have deep crows feet and they want to prolong the inevitable?

Preventative steps. If preventing crows feet is important to you, you need to be doing whatever you can at this age to keep the fine lines from getting deeper.

On top of wearing sunglasses daily, I recommend exfoliating daily. The gold standard in exfoliation is glycolic acid and I recommend it for those looking for anti-aging help all the way down to those looking for anti-acne help. Chemical exfoliants such as glycolic acid work better than physical exfoliants.

Exfoliating works by taking away the dead skin cells on the top layer of your skin, called the epidermis. On top of removing the dead skin cells forcing fresh skin to the surface, this also adds volume to the epidermis, helping to smooth out lines.

And under the epidermis is the dermis, where the collagen is formed. Using glycolic acid to exfoliate will help promote new collagen growth, which also adds volume to the dermis. This easy step can help smooth out the early static lines.

I also recommend using peptides. Peptides are tiny little particles that the body thinks are little pieces of broken collagen. The body “sees” those broken collagen pieces and in turn, the dermis makes more collagen to replace the broken collagen. This helps smooth fine lines.

Speaking of product and ingredients, what do you think about those tape-like products like Furlesse where you literally tape the lines in your skin? Do they really help with the wrinkles?

They won’t really smooth the lines unless they have peptides in them. But if you use them continuously, you may see a very minimal improvement of maybe 5%, but 5% is 5%!

What can you do in-office to help with crows feet that does not involve injections?

In office glycolic acid peels are a great first start. We use a higher percentage of glycolic acid than you can get at home and it takes less than 10 minutes for the entire procedure. The acid actually works in 2 to 3 minutes.

Also, laser treatments are available. They work by making your body believe there is a small wound. The body reacts by building more collagen to heal the wound.

When do injectable medications come in to play?

You can start using preventative Botulinum toxin before your crows feet are an issue. (AKA: Botox or Dysport) Using injectable Botulinum toxin on your static lines, or the lines that don’t go away when you stop smiling, will help keep the collagen from breaking down completely, like in the paperclip analogy above. This is a great step that I recommend anyone start when they are noticing those early static lines.

And if you’re afraid of the needle, the exciting news is that by 2013, we hope, there will be topical Botulinum toxin available in your dermatologist’s office. It has the exact same results as the injectable form with no pain. It will take about 30 minutes in the office and just like the injectable form, results will last for 3 to 4 months.

What about side effects with injectables in your crows feet?

When you use Botulinum toxin on your crows feet, there are no concerns for “frozen face” because the muscles used there are not muscles that you need for most expressions.

Do you ever recommend against injectables for someone?

Botulinum toxin isn’t recommended for those who are pregnant or those who have had facial paralysis such as Bells Palsy until the effects of the palsy are gone. And even then, choose a provider with experience in using injectables on people with past facial paralysis.

Final words of advice about crows feet?

Preventative care is key. Do what you can early in life to prevent crow’s feet. Also, pass these tips on to your teenage daughters who will thank you one day.

Thank you again, Dr. Schultz for your time and expert tips on crows feet.

He explained these fine lines like this: When you bend a paperclip back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, it will eventually break from the repetitive motion.? Argan Oil Benefits

What is Argan Oil?

Argan oil is pressed from the nut of the fruit of the Argan Tree, which is only found in Morocco. The argan tree lives to be about 150 to 200 years old and does not start producing the fruit until it is 30 to 50 years old. Because the tree is found only in a limited area, the oil itself is quite rare.

What do Goats Have to Do With it?

Morocco's mountain goat, called the Tamri goat, eats the fruit of the Argan tree. The goats literally climb the tree to get to the nut. Sometimes ten or more at a time in one tree. For a tree that only grows to be about 35 feet tall, that's a lot of goats.

The argan oil producers would take the droppings of the goats, which had the seed completely undigested, and use that to produce the argan oil. While we're sure that is still practiced today, we are hearing that some argan oil producers are producing the oil without the help of goats.

Argan Oil as a Food

Argan oil is nutty tasting oil that is good for sprinkling in salads, dipping bread in and used in many dishes. Here are a few recipes that include argan oil.

Argan Oil Beauty Benefits

We're about ready to declare argan oil as the best beauty ingredient, period. We've been using argan oil for some time and have yet to be let down. Here are some easy ways to include argan oil in your beauty regimen.

  • Hair: Argan oil is a great product to calm frizzy ends, add moisture to dry hair as well as add a little shine. Apply to your hair while it is still damp for an all over treatment or apply just to your dry ends after your hair is dry.
  • Scalp: If you're dealing with dry scalp, apply some argan oil to a cotton ball and dab your scalp with the oil. If you do this before bed, you'll give the oil plenty of time to moisturize your scalp before you wash your hair in the morning.
  • Face: It might seem scary to apply a pure oil to your face, especially if you have finicky skin, but we have been doing just that and our skin is completely turning around. It's smooth, clear and radiant, all thanks to using argan oil as our daily morning moisturizer.
  • Body: You can use argan oil for a full body moisturizer, applying just as you would a body lotion or cream. Apply the oil right after you get out of your shower for best moisturizing results.
  • Hands: Argan oil is a great oil to use on your hands, especially on your cuticles and on your nails if they are prone to cracking and peeling.

Argan Oil Product Picks

Because of argan oil's increasing popularity, many skin care companies are jumping on the argan oil bandwagon. It is definitely a mid-range beauty product, but the concentration and small amount needed help with the cost. Plus, with the skin benefits we've seen, we're almost at the point of ditching everything but the sunscreen and sticking with argan oil head-to-toe.

We recommend finding a product line that has 100% pure Moroccan Argan Oil for best benefits. Here are a few product lines that get good reviews, but any 100% pure argan oil is a good purchase.

Thow Out Your Lotions and Moisturizers

I'm on my soapbox right now yelling from the rooftops.

I love argan oil!

In case my yelling isn't enough, let me tell you why I love argan oil so much.? I have a small bottle of 100% argan oil from Activaroma (buy direct) and I can't get enough of it.? At first, I would use it on my body after my shower, but one day I was brave enough to put it on my face.? I say brave because I'm in my mid-30's and I still get breakouts.? My skin is finicky and I am so careful about what I put on it.

The moisturizer I had been using was too heavy for my skin and I needed something different.? I remembered the argan oil and went for it.? And in the past month, I have seen my skin radically change.? It's soft, smooth, blemish-free for the most part and I give all the thanks to the argan oil that I've been using.? Yes, putting oil on my face still makes me a little nervous, but the results speak for themselves.

Come check out our latest article, Benefits of Argan Oil for Skin, Hair and Body and see if you are intrigued enough to buy your own bottle of argan oil.

New How to Lighten Body Hair (Video)

Sometimes the hair itself doesn't really bother us, but it's how dark or noticeable it is that does. While there are plenty options for actually removing the hair, just taking it down to a light blonde color often does the trick.

And even though the specific bleach made for body hair is a strong product, I've found they're nowhere near as bad smelling or hard on the skin as hair removal creams. Plus, you don't have to worry about getting razor bumps or ingrown hair. How do you bleach it? Watch the video.

Kinerase: Ultimate Moisturizer

Realistically, we know that more money doesn't always mean a better skin care product. Why is it when we see a $125 moisturizer, we wonder if we're missing something by not using it?

Why the Hefty Price Tag?

Kinerase is Compare Prices sold in dermatology and plastic surgery centers, as well as high end cosmetics stores. Known as a luxury skin care line; you may recognize their spokesperson: Courtney Cox. Kinerase uses Kinetin, "the substance that actually prevents plant leaves from drying out and withering."

Some critics of Kinetin state that just not enough research has been done. While they are seeing positive results, what about long term use? How much Kinetin is needed to get the best results? But the fact of the matter is, Kinetin is a buzz word in skin care.

To learn the nitty gritty about Kinetin and what it is claimed to be able to do for the skin, this is a great beginning site. When looking for products containing Kinetin, you'll notice it only links you to Kinerase products (a company owned site?), however, you'll be happy to know that if you're simply looking for the benefits of Kinetin, you have options.

The Body Shop and Almay are two cheaper options, however the amount of Kinetin in these products may be of lesser value than Kinerase.

But is it Worth the Price?

One thing we know about Kinerase (and Kinetin in general) is that it is great for sensitive skin and best suited for mature or very dry skin. Customer reviews show that while many people love the product, they are completely turned off by the price tag. Paula Begoun gives it a negative review, stating that it is not a great choice for day because there is no sunscreen, and that it isn't a good choice at all, especially for sensitive skin, because it contains harsh ingredients such as grapefruit peel oil which can cause irritations.

Anti aging products are top sellers because everyone is looking for the quick painless way to turn back the clock. Realistically though, nothing in a bottle will reverse the clock. If you have fine lines due to dehydration, plumping your skin with moisture will help reduce them. A skin care product will not get rid of deep facial lines.

If you're looking for an anti aging product and Kinetin sounds intriguing to you, I'd recommend you try The Body Shop's Kinetin line which is getting good reviews and will leave you with more money in your wallet. They also have the right approach by not claiming it will magically erase lines, just reduce the appearance.

However, if price is no option for you, feel free to give it a try. Just be aware that they have a 30-day money back guarantee on unopened products, but only a 10-day guarantee once the product is opened. That's 10 days from the date of purchase, not the day you receive it. For spending $125, they don't give you very long to experiment, do they?
