Doing hair removal at home is definitely convenient and much cheaper than going to a salon or spa. The easiest ways to do so for the body are normally shaving and using hair removal creams (a.k.a depilatories). I almost wrote off depilatories altogether years ago when I was left with a chemical burn on my lip and I don't have sensitive skin.

In any case, some people don't want to use the razor feeling a hair removal cream will give longer-lasting results. But before you start slathering yourself and your bikini zone with one, we have some advice for you. Vaniqa Hair Removal Cream

Vaniqa is a prescription facial hair removal cream for women. This product isn't an instant remedy like the hair removal cream you might be thinking of, like Nair, where you apply, let it do its job for a couple minutes and then wipe off the hair. Vaniqa is actually supposed to prevent women's facial hair from growing.

With so many different hair removal kits on the market today, it can be very confusing trying to decide?what you're going to use to get rid of that winter coat. Since?my assistant Nicole and I?have had?the opportunity to test out loads of products (and we mean a lot!) we wanted to share what worked the best for us and give our top picks with different budgets and methods in mind for men and women.

1. Parissa Wax Strips

These?wax strips are the best Nicole has?ever tried. Choose from?different sizes and formulas for different parts of the face and body for both men and women.?Simply pull them apart and use- waxing at home?made easy.

They don’t require heat, work quickly because the wax is already attached and are very affordable. Once hairless (for up to six weeks), there’s no messy clean up and hardly any waste.

The only downfall of these strips?is if your hands get a little wet, it?can be?difficult to pull the strip. But it’s nothing a towel can’t handle.

2. Tria Laser at Home

This is a real device for performing laser at home approved for permanent hair reduction on your legs, bikini line, underarms, feet, arms, hands, chest, and back. Of course, your skin needs to fall in right tone and it won’t work on hair that’s blonde, red, white or gray.?You’ll also need to use it for a total of eight times every two to four weeks.

Treatments can take a lot of time, especially?if you're working on a large area because?they need to be done both vertically and horizontally?and the device has a?small head (see how Tria laser works). But you’ll be zapping away in the comfort of your own home, and priced at $495, I’m sure save a ton over going to a clinic or spa.

?And the results? Well, it worked great on my bikini line (read review).

3. Bliss Philips Bikini Perfect Deluxe

Instead of buying different tools, an epilator, electric razor, and a trimmer?are part of the six attachments to use pretty much anywhere on your body. You won't get the same ultra-smooth shave with the electric razor like with a manual one, but it's pretty close. If you would like the hair gone for weeks at a time, try the epilating attachment.

Although this rechargeable, cordless system is packaged and marketed to women, men will also like it (Nicole's husband sure did). It's waterproof, so?save time and take it with you in the shower (read review).??

Any drawbacks??It doesn’t work well with shaving creams. The bright side is- you save money there!

4. Shobha Sugaring Kit

Sugaring removes the hair from the root like waxing and lasts for weeks, but is known to be much gentler to the skin and hurt less than waxing. This kit (previously called Madhu Mini)?has the same products used at the very popular Shobha salons in New York City.

You’ll get everything you need to sugar at home for about $30,?including the most adorable denim strips that can be washed and re-used. Since it's heated in the microwave, you might need to re-zap the sugar to keep it the right temperature to easily remove the hair. But I think it’s well worth it.

5. Venus Bikini Razor Kit

Here’s a wonderful hair removal kit for an easy, groomed and hair free bikini line with a trimmer, razor and lotion for about $10. The Venus Embrace razor helps you get smooth using five blades.?A separate trimmer has a protective comb that makes grooming easy and neat- no batteries required (read review). It trims to about a quarter of an inch,?the perfect length needed?if you're going to get a bikini?wax.

Also included is a sample of Olay Moisture, a nice and light moisturizer for after the shave. The kit itself if great, but it’s still shaving, which means you'll have to continue forever!

Guide Review- Avon Skin So Soft Fresh & Smooth Facial Hair Removal Cream

I had a hair removal party and used this product on three different hair and skin types. Let me say, trying to come up with an invitation for that was a bit difficult! We tried several different types of hair removers, but the number one for the evening was this product by Avon.

Picture three girls, with relatively thick mustaches and even one person with what she called her goatee. They all used the Avon hair removal cream on their faces.

First Tackle: Sensitive Skin

The first victim, "Elizabeth", has blond, thin hair. She tends to have sensitive skin and breaks out with most make-up and skin care products. She had a slight mustache that she was not fond of and would normally shave it every day. She used to wax but with the economy the way it is, she has to watch every penny.

She simply used the tube and smoothed on a thick layer over her top lip and left it on for 2 minutes and 3 seconds. Yep, we had a stopwatch. Voila. All her hair was gone. She didn't have any redness, bumps or tightness and said her upper lip felt very soft. She was pleased with the outcome.

Next Up: Thick Facial Hair

The second girl to try the product was "Nelah". She had the same mustache going on, except her facial hair is black and thick. She has normal skin with no dryness. I must add that she is from India, and beautiful without the extra facial hair, but with it, wow. Let's just say I was happy to have her try the product.

She simply applied cream and waited for 3 minutes and 23 seconds. She has tried cream hair removers before and has always had to leave them on for much longer than recommended. Using a warm damp cloth she revealed her beautiful hairless face. There was no redness or puffiness, and her face felt soft. Although she could do with out the "nasty smell", as she put it.

Last: De-fuzzing Lip and Chin

Next was "Gretchen". She has drier skin with brown, thick hair that tends to be coarser. She did the same by smoothing the product over her lip and chin area. She waited the exact 2 minutes and thirty seconds and removed it to reveal her hairless lip and chin. She said she did not have to press hard to remove the hair. Her upper lip felt tight but not dry, and she had no redness or red bumps. She said it beat the painful waxing she has been doing for years.

Overall

The only downfall that these girls and I found was the awful scent of the product. It did not smell fresh or clean. It did its job well and lived up to everything the product information stated.

Looking for Dermology Hair Removal Cream Reviews

Once again I'm asking my readers to help me with some reviews. This time it's for Dermology Hair Removal Cream. I know there are a lot of hair removal creams on the market. But when I got an email asking me about the product, it made me very curious because this one doesn't offer the same kind of precautions I normally see.

First of all it says it can safely be used on any part of the body. Since hair removal creams are strong products because they actually break down the hair so that it can be wiped off, most can't be used on the genitals. Secondly, it also gives the okay for the eyebrows. I have never heard of a hair removal cream suggesting to be used near the eyes, it's understandably always a big no-no.

Beyond being a hair removal cream, it calls itself "an advance hair inhibitor system." It has claims on the page such as, "Our product has proven to eliminate regular shaving, waxing and the use of tweezers." And rivals itself against other hair removal methods saying it's "the most effective alternative to expensive laser treatments and electrolysis."

Home Laser Hair Removal

At home laser hair removal is also an option over going to a spa or clinic. You can perform the treatments in the privacy of home at your convenience while owning a personal device. Working similarly to the professional treatments, the best candidates are those with light skin and dark hair and require multiple treatments for optimal results.

Although you can save a substantial amount of money over professional treatments, look very carefully into the model before purchasing so you don’t waste your money. And like with any high-tech device, make sure to fully read the instructions and precautions before using.

1. Tria

A cordless rechargeable diode laser cleared by the FDA for use on the neck down, it has three (most recent version now has five) adjustable settings to control the amount of heat. A skin sensor comes in the kit to test your skin tone, and only if you pass with a green light will the Tria unlock for use.

2. Silk'n

Although it's not a laser, it used pulsed light, which works similarly to laser hair removal to disable hair growth. Cleared by the FDA also for use on the neck down applying this Home Pulsed Light? (HPL?) technology, or optical energy to disable hair growth. It has five adjustable settings going from low to high and is made by HomeSkinovations. Their newest model Silk'n SensEpil has a built-in skin sensor to check skin tone for safety.

3. Epila

Pro Underarm Hair Removal

You want the longest lasting results for underarm hair removal, right? All of the options below keep you hair-free for weeks, maybe even permanently. Because of the location of the underarm and the process of these methods, you'll have to go to the professionals.

1. Waxing

Waxing removes the entire hair follicle from the root if done correctly, lasting up to six weeks.

You may be wondering why you need to get this done professionally. First, you need two hands to wax, and one hand will be unavailable because you’ll have to extend your arm straight up to get to your underarm. Second, the underarm can be a bit tricky because the hair often grows in different directions, instead of all in the same way. Needless to say, your home results won’t work out well.

2. Sugaring

The real sugaring uses a paste to remove the entire hair follicle from the root, lasting up to six weeks. Although, similar to waxing, people choose sugaring because it’s more gentle to those with sensitive skin and is the less painful option.

Why you shouldn’t sugar at home for underarm hair removal is the same reason as above, in waxing.

For Best Results: Hair needs to be at least 1/16” for the sugar to be able to hold onto and remove.

Ask the salon or spa before booking the appointment if it’s the real sugaring method, not just some sugar mixed with a wax product. Try to book an appointment with a technician that’s been recommended by a friend or family member.

3. Electrolysis

An electric current is applied with a very fine needle-shaped electrode, or metal probe into each hair follicle for about one minute to destroy the root. Electrolysis is the only method approved for permanent hair removal by the FDA, although everyone doesn't acheive 100% success.

For Best Results: Electrolysis is a very long process that requires many sessions, so know exactly what you’re getting into before getting your first treatment.

How to Clean Up Dripped Hair Removal Wax

This week I dripped wax on my long wooden tray in my bathroom when waxing myself at home. Good thing it wasn't a big gooey mess like in the photo above.

How did I clean it up? Oil. It's not a friend of soft (strip) wax and actually breaks it down. That's why skin needs to be cleansed first to get rid of the skin's natural oils, including makeup and lotion before getting waxed. Otherwise the oil repels the wax and it won't adhere to the hair well, and then you guessed it, won't come out.

When I actually got to the small mess, the wax had already dried. I used olive oil because it was in the bathroom (olive oil is my makeup remover) and it's non-staining. A little bit on a cotton pad and the dried wax slid right off.

If you have a big mess (like you spill the pot) and it has hardened, then it helps to warm up the wax to make the clean up easier. Take a blow-dryer on a low-setting and then tidy up with your oil of choice.

Homemade Hair Removal

Question: Do You Have Any Homemade Hair Removal Recipes?

Answer: Yes, I have a recipe that is easy, inexpensive, all natural and uses ingredients you probably already have at home like sugar, water and lemon juice. It’s a hair removal technique called sugaring which has been around for ages and removes the entire hair follicle from the root. Results can last for up to six weeks!

Many people prefer sugaring over waxing because it’s gentler to the skin and doesn’t hurt as much because there's less sticking to the skin- so there’s less pulling than waxing. Another bonus is that you can remove the sugar with plain old water to clean skin when you’re done removing your hair, it’s water soluble.

Homemade Hair Removal Recipe

Our recipe (get instructions) guides you step-by-step with pictures to making your own sugaring mixture for hair removal at home. When you’re finished and it cools, you can use it as a paste to remove hair as short as 1/16” without the use of any strips. You can also heat up the sugar mixture and use it as a gel, in a hair removal process done similarly to waxing. It’s an easier technique, but you’ll need at least 1/4" of hair growth and a bit more items like strips and applicators.

Finally, someone actually came up with a creme hair remover that did not have a horrible smell. I wouldn't go as far as calling it pure, but it was not that bad either.

The box looked like the well-known Sally Hansen orange and white box. I opened it up and found a convenient pump inside. Wow, a simple and easy way to get the product out of the container. And easy it was.

I used this product on my legs. I have coarse, thick hair and I do not like shaving. I wax. But I really wanted to give this product a try since I don't always have the time to go for my waxing and I really don't want to shave every day.

I applied a generous amount of product on my legs and waited for three minutes on my right leg before I began to remove the product. I had no burning or stinging and although I didn't care for the smell, it was tolerable. I removed the product and noticed that I still had some hair that was hanging on for dear life.

After about four and a half minutes, I removed the hair removal creme from my left leg. This leg was left completely hairless and smooth. I did not feel and stinging or burning even though I left it on a little longer.

I noticed that the hair seemed to be gone from under my skin. No five o'clock shadow from a lazy shaving job on my gams! My skin felt moisturized and not tight like some creams leave your skin feeling.

The best part about it, I didn't have to shave for four days. That is a record for my Italian legs. I actually enjoyed using Sally Hansen Pure Scent-Sation Hair Removal Creme. The bottle gave me three applications on both legs.

Question: Do You Recommend Laser Hair Removal for Chin Hair on Women?

Answer: To give you a basic overview, laser is FDA approved for permanent hair reduction and uses pulsed light to disable the hair follicle. The best candidates are those with skin tones on the lighter side and dark hair, because the light targets the pigment (color in the hair). That is why it's not safe for people that have dark skin because it can cause scarring and blistering with the majority of the lasers on the market.

As you can see for safety reasons, it's not for everyone. Beyond that, here are some other things to consider.

What You Need to Know About Laser Hair Removal on Chin Hair

• Even though the hair on your head might be naturally dark, your facial hair always isn't. With the most commonly used lasers, it won't work well in reducing light chin hair. It's a better option for women who have dark hair on their chin.
• Another issue is that laser and IPL (intense pulsed light) may stimulate hidden facial hair to grow in women. This doesn't mean that it will, just that it has and it can.
• It can be pricey. Multiple treatments are needed, so it's not cheap venture once it's said and done.

What About at Home?

Tria laser, an at-home device can be used on the majority of the body, but not the face. However another product for home, Silk'n SensEpil, that uses IPL (intense pulsed light) can be used on the face from the cheekline down.
