Shaving Soap from Daybreak Lavender Farm

 shaving soap, daybreak lavender farm

I've always shied away from shaving soaps, even though they have a cult following and are made by some of the top shaving companies. I think just the word 'soap' and the thought of a thin barrier on the skin between me and the razor, were partly to blame.

After a Cooking with Lavender Class held at Daybreak Boutique (side note: chocolate and lavender are amazing together!), I just had to pick up their handmade Wash & Shave Bar with Calming Lavender and Bentonite Clay for Smooth Shaving.

Shaving soaps should be used with a shaving brush to create a nice lather. I didn't have one, though it's on my list, so I tried it brushless. Even so, it worked really, really well. The soap provided a lot of slip, I got a pretty close shave and my skin felt really soft afterwards.

Their formula uses the oils of olive, coconut, palm and castor. Bentonite clay, also added, draws out toxins, is highly absorbent, and exfoliates, so it's great for oily skin and can also be used to cleanse with as well. This one includes lavender essential oil. For men, they make a shaving soap with sandalwood.

The bar is huge, which will surely last a long time. With any shaving soap, it needs to be placed on a draining soap dish so that it doesn't sit in water and wear down faster than necessary.

Coola: Sunscreen

The Bottom Line

If you've yet to hear of Coola, take note. This sun care company makes the most amazing sunscreens that not only protect your skin, but help protect the planet as well. Did I mention how fantastic they smell?

Pros

  • Best smelling sunscreen
  • Organic Ingredients, Made in the USA
  • No Animal Testing - Tested on Humans (Don't you love that?)
  • Biodegradable Packaging; Earth Conscious Printing; Recycled Paper
  • Donates a portion of the profits to skin cancer research

Cons

Description

  • Earth conscience sun care company based in Los Angeles.
  • Non-typical fragrances make their sunscreens stand out in a world of coconut-scented sunscreen.
  • Endorsed by the American Lifeguard Association

Guide Review - Coola: Sunscreen

I'm excited to tell you about Coola, because it has become my current favorite sun care line. Before we talk about how fantastic this company is, I have to tell you just how fantastic their sunscreens smell. Coola has four fragrances for your body: Mango, Plumeria, Cucumber and Unscented, and two fragrances for your face: Cucumber and Unscented. I had a chance to try out each scent, and fell in love with them all. My favorite would probably be Plumeria, with Cucumber close behind. If you have always wished for a body moisturizer with SPF, that's basically what you're getting with Coola; fabulous smelling sunscreen that moisturizes as well as protects against the sun and aging with the inclusion of antioxidants.

Coola sunscreen ranges in protection from SPF 30 to SPF 45, and have been endorsed by the American Lifeguard Association. Their approach to business is one that should be emulated by other companies. They use bio-degradable packaging with earth-friendly inks and recycled papers. They do not test on animals, but instead tests solely on humans. Their products are made in the United States, and Coola donates part of their profits to skin cancer research.

If you're looking for your face, Coola: Cucumber Face SPF 30 has a light lingering scent that you'll be happy to apply on a regular basis. It is a thick cream that soaks in quickly leaving your skin matte. It is water and sweat resistant, and uses ingredients known for being gentle and non-irritating.

I really am in love with the Coola line, and would recommend their sunscreens to anyone who is looking for an earth friendly option in sun care. Especially for those who are hesitant to use sunscreens with a strong tropical scent.

Is Shaving Pubic Hair Normal?

Question: Is It Okay and Normal to Shave Pubic Hair?

Answer: It's a personal preference whether you want to remove or keep it. But it's commonly done and considered safe if you use the right technique and tools. The pages that we have here at About.com- Hair Removal about getting a smooth bikini line or area are extremely popular.

Both men and women get rid of hair in their intimate zone. Some people just remove the hair outside their underwear line. Others like to remove almost all of their hair, and many like to go totally bare.

Keep in mind that it's a bit shaving your bikini zone than your face or legs. Pubic hair tends to be curlier and thicker than some other parts of the body. So it's prone to getting razor burn, ingrown hair and irritation- especially your first couple of times. Our guides below help you to avoid these problems and get a safe, close shave.

If you have never shaved your pubic hair before, it's good to start out with just doing the hair outside your underwear and working up from there. Often it's too much to shave it all off right from the start.

BB Cream Review: Tonymoly Intense Care Snail BB Cream

Our last post was titled "What is BB Cream" and I heard from many people who were intrigued, completely not knowing or hearing about BB cream before.? My sister even rushed out that day to get some after learning about it! I have a feeling you're all going to know what BB cream is soon because you're all going to go? try it yourself.

My sister couldn't wait for the international shipping of a Korean BB cream, so she picked up Clinique's BB Cream. (compare prices)? For me, I'm all about the Korean BB Creams right now.? While in Seoul last month, I asked the sales associate what one was the best and she immediately pointed to Tonymoly's Intense Care Snail BB Cream.? My 7-year-old was standing next to me, my husband and 10-year old waiting outside, feeling rushed I just grabbed it and paid, never noticing the word "snail" or the big picture of a snail on the bottle.? But I did notice snails all over the BB cream posters from then on out.

Snail "goo", for a lack of a better word, is well used in Korea for its anti-aging benefits.? Who knew? It kind of weirded me out a bit, I won't lie, but I'm all over that now because I love my Tonymoly BB cream.? I have a list of Korean BB creams to try after this one.? Next up is Skin79's BB Cream, which you can get for around $15.? (compare prices)? But make sure to do your research on making sure you are getting an original and not a fake.

Going to try a BB Cream?? Check out my review of Tonymoly's Intense Care Snail BB Cream and see if this one is right for you. (Also available on Amazon!)

After & In Between Bikini Wax

You may know what to do right after your bikini wax, but what should you do in the interim until the next time? There are a few things to think about to keep ready for summer's short shorts.

When Should I Make My Next Appointment?

This will be different for everyone because hair grows at different rates. If this is your first waxing, or you haven't had one in some time there is hair underneath the skin growing that hasn't reached the surface yet. If you've had a couple of consecutive?waxing appointments, three weeks is generally going to work. Again, everyone is different and this is not a rule.

Should I Shave?

Ladies and gentleman, you can shave after a wax. But this will almost always put you back to square one because shaving leaves the hair with a blunt end and can make it appear thicker and darker. If you can wait to continue waxing, you will save yourself a lot of headaches. You may even notice a difference in the texture, color and amount of hair over time with frequent appointments. The worst part is waiting for your hair to grow out again!

To Tweeze or Not To Tweeze?

I know a couple of people who like to tweeze any hair they can. After waxing for a while, your hair does tend to come out easier. However, I recommend not tweezing. Every hair you tweeze will set you back. Our hair grows in three cycles. When you wax your body knows there is no hair and it needs to start growing. If you tweeze some hair as it begins to sprout, you are sending these hairs into different stages. So the next time you go to wax, you might see new hair growth sooner than?you did the first time.

Scrub, Scrub, Scrub After a Bikini Waxing!

I am a firm believer of exfoliation. I don't mean scrubbing until your skin is raw, but giving it a light buffing regularly in between bikini waxes.

Manual exfoliators

  • Oily skin. Try a salt based salt scrub (compare prices) about two to three times per week.
  • Normal to dry skin. Try a sugar based salt scrub (compare prices) at least once, up to three times per week.

Chemical exfoliators
Using a bump-fighting product like Tend Skin will also help keep ingrown hair away and encourage fresh looking skin. Resurf.a.stic Ingrown by Blinc?is a great multi-tasking product and alternative?to the over the counter scrubs.?Barc Bump Down Razor Bump Relief?is a top pick for those with dry skin because it's alcohol-free,?and contains alot of hydrating ingredients without leaving you oily.

Moisturize

A good moisturizer that will not clog your pores will be an asset. Remember not to use any lotions the first couple of days after your waxing. Hydrated skin not only?looks healthy?but also makes it harder for ingrown hair to appear.

Everyone is different

Remember that we have different skin and hair, so what works for one many not work for another. Women and men?obviously aren't exactly the same. But I do recommend men heading the same advice. Keep with the waxing and try not to give up. You will be hair free and happy.

A Lesson in UV Rays from My 2nd Grader

This is Logan, my 8 year old. Yesterday, after he got off the school bus, he saw his brother Miles and I playing outside.? Deciding whether or not he wanted to join us, he took a look at the posts on my deck, measured them out and seemed to be concentrating rather hard.

After I asked what he was doing, he said he was checking to see how high the UV Rays were at that time.?? I was so excited to learn that Logan's health teacher was teaching them about UV Rays and "the big protective layer around the earth that has a hole!" (Ozone layer) ? She even taught them the "shadow trick".?? If you're wondering if it's a safe time to go out for some time, look at your shadow. Is it longer than you? Shorter than you? No shadow at all?

Ideally, you want your shadow to be longer than you, because then you know that the sun isn't high in the sky, omitting a high amount of UV Rays. So if your kids didn't learn this in health class, teach them!

And here's a few more things that are of value to you:

  1. MySkinCheck.ca - This site is amazing! It gives you your risk of future skin cancer, helps you track your moles, gives you healthy sun tips - just a wealth of info for everyone!
  2. Climate Prediction Center - If your state is experiencing an unusually high amount of UV Rays, this map will apparently tell you.? Ideally, the map should be completely white. If you see yellow or red, you need to take extra precaution. (Right now some of you Montana people should be aware.)
  3. The difference between UVA and UVB Rays - If you don't know the difference between UVA and UVB Rays - What one causes cancer? What one ages my skin? - This article will help you decipher and protect your skin

The sun is a beautiful thing! It feels good, it lifts our spirits and it certainly is a nice relief from a cold Spring.? There are a million things you can do outside in the summer, and there is no reason to avoid the bountiful blessings that the sun is. Just play it safe and you can enjoy a long summer of sunshine!

Teach your kids while they are young so that sun safety is just another bit of knowledge they have as they grow and make choices of their own.

Schick Quattro Women's Review

The Bottom Line

Schick Quattro for Women, the only razor a girl needs to have in my book. The four blades give a super close shave without nicking, and the conditioning strips leave skin soft.

Pros

  • Four blades
  • Aloe and vitamin E conditioning strips on either side of blade
  • Pivoting head

Cons

  • One of the pricier drugstore razors

Description

  • Manufacturer- Schick Wilkinson-Sword, an Energizer Company
  • Usage- Women's razor
  • Options - A disposable kind is available, but this review is on the regular version
  • Average Initial Cost - $9.00 (handle, 2 blades and shower hanger)
  • Average Refill Cost - $18.00 (8 blade refills)

Guide Review - Schick Quattro For Women

I've tried many razors throughout my life, because shaving is quick and easy. I haven't (so far) found a better razor than Schick Quattro for Women. This razor gives me a close, nick-free shave while moisturizing my skin.

At first I thought it was the four blades that made the world of difference in my close shave, so I tried another company's brand with multiple blades, but there was no comparison. Schick Quattro for Women gave me a much closer shave. I'm sure it will come to no big surprise that Schick Quattro for Women's razor itself is made in China, but interesting to note the blade cartridge is made in Germany. While I'm not quite sure where all other razor manufacturer's get their blades, this German-made blade may be the huge difference in quality.

The conditioning strips are another big plus. Even if you don't have time to apply lotion after shaving, the hydration power is just enough to moisturize skin without making it feel greasy.

Way to go Schick, I think you may just have the perfect woman's razor.

What is BB Cream?

“BB” stands for Blemish Balm, but you don’t have to have a single blemish on your skin to use and love BB Cream. BB cream is great for anyone with any skin color or any skin type. Here is more on where it came from, how you use it, who it’s best for and where you can buy it.

Where did BB Cream originate: BB Cream was created more than 50 years ago by German Doctor, Dr. Christine Schrammek. It was initially created to be used to help heal skin after skin peels as well as hide any scars and redness post peel treatment. It was later introduced in Asia, specifically South Korea where K-pop stars and K-drama stars made note of its ability to transform skin. With several big-name stars endorsing it in South Korea, consumers went wild for it.

BB Cream is known by everyone in South Korea. We found it everywhere, from outdoor markets to malls. It will be that way in the United States soon. It’s thee hot product right now.

What does it do: Blemish Balm or BB Cream is a multi-tasking skin product that truly can be the one product your skin needs. It’s said to be able to moisturize, protect against the sun, soothe skin, prime skin and give full coverage, depending on the brand. (Though, in our experience, our skin needed a real moisturizer applied under. In doing so, the BB cream went on easier and looked more natural.)

Isn’t this Just a Foundation? Well, yes and no. It’s more like a tinted moisturizer, but with more coverage and many times an amazing SPF level. Each brand is different in its ability to cover blemishes and skin imperfections. While in South Korea, we purchased Tony Moly Intense Repair Snail Therapy BB Cream and it gives full coverage and literally erases any skin issues, but not all of them have such full coverage.

All BB creams vary in coverage, color, matte vs. dewy, SPF level, etc… It’s definitely a product you should experiment until you find the one best suited for you. If you don’t like a heavy foundation but still want coverage, BB cream is for you. It can also be used as a concealer or highlighter, too!

Who is it Best Suited For: Most people with medium to light skin tone; women and men, actually. But note that the BB cream might have to be mixed with foundation if you have dark skin tone. Unlike foundations, there is typically just one shade (or sometimes a couple shades) of BB cream. This is why it is considered a unisex product. (However, there were BB Creams in South Korea marketed just for men, so we’re waiting on that in the US, too.)

If you have darker skin, you can mix a bit of your foundation to make it match your skin better, but the US lines are doing a better job at offering better options for darker skin tones. When I purchased mine in South Korea, I specifically asked the woman if it would be OK for my skin and she said, “Yes, any skin!” She was right for my skin! I love my BB cream!

Where Can You Buy it: Skin care and makeup lines in the US are a hopping on the BB Cream train as we speak. Companies like Garnier, Clinique, Smashbox and Too Faced are some of the first to offer a BB Cream in the US. (We saw Garnier’s advertised all over in Seoul, too!) More lines are being developed as you read this and we’re certain that the US is going to have a BB cream explosion.

As for us, we’re going to try some of these, but if we can’t find what we want, we’re going to try to buy our beloved Tony Moly online. Thank you Amazon!

Orbeez Soothing Spa? No Thank You!

Have you seen those commercials for the new Orbeez Soothing Spa?? I'm just so turned off.? Call me crazy, but the thought of putting my daughter's feet in those little wet orbs more than once is just gross.? Add into the mix a couple of girls and a pedicure party. No thank you!

Before you run out and buy one for your child, just consider the fact that these cannot be cleaned. They say to add a little salt to keep them fresher longer, but for me, I'll pass. We have an orbeez kit at our house and the balls get moldy after a short amount of time.? They literally just drink up the water and then shrivel back down when they are left to dry.

When your daughter or her friends soak their feet in them, their germs and dead skin cells and whatever else they might have living on their feet will get mixed in and that is just too much for me. Skip it altogether, head to the dollar store and pick up what you need for a real pedicure. (step-by-step instructions)

What is BB Cream?

I spent 10 days in South Korea last month and even though I wasn't there on business, I couldn't help but be drawn in to the BB cream craze. BB creams are everywhere in Seoul! From the high-end shopping malls to the open-air markets, you'll find BB cream without having to look.

My good friend Grace, whose family is from Korea and who visits Korea regularly told me all about BB cream last year, so I couldn't wait to get my hands on a bottle or two while in Seoul.

BB creams are just starting to make a name for themselves in the USA, but I find that many people just don't know what BB creams actually are.? I'm doing a multi-piece series on BB cream and what I learned while in Seoul.

The first: What is BB Cream?? Soon after I'll share a review of what BB cream came highly recommend to me while in Seoul and we'll talk about application tips and the brands you can find currently in the US. You'll definitely want to try a BB cream soon!

How to Remove Toe Hair Fast without Shaving

how to remove toe hair, toe hair removalResist the urge to use the razor a little lower and shave your toes, while you're shaving your legs. Since they're such small areas and the hair is usually sparse, it's extremely easy to wax or sugar your toes. And you don't even have to get a ton of supplies, or buy any products from the store necessarily.

To wax, it only takes a couple steps to remove the hair from the root. There's no heating up product or big mess if you use pre-made wax strips. On clean skin dab on some baby powder, apply a wax strip, rub your fingers over the strip a couple of times in the direction hair growth, hold skin taut and remove strip the opposite direction of hair growth. Use an unscented body oil to get rid of any stickiness.

To spend extra time but save money, make your own sugaring product at home. Try this homemade, natural recipe that simply calls for sugar, lemon juice and water. When finished, you can use it as a paste or a gel. How-to directions are at the end of the recipe. You'll notice how much longer waxing or sugaring last over shaving.

Men's Norelco BodyGroom Review

The Bottom Line

Philips Norelco BodyGroom allows you to trim or shave with ease, precision and comfort. The the only tool you need for keeping men’s body hair under control- you'll wonder what you ever did without it.

Pros

  • Can be used both wet and dry
  • 5 different lengths for trimming
  • Can shave hair totally down
  • Cordless- 50 minutes of use time
  • Hypoallergenic shaving foils

Cons

Description

  • Manufacturer: Philips Norelco
  • Usage: Men’s full body grooming below the neck
  • Average Price: $59.99
  • Kit includes: Handle, trimming and shaving attachments, two trimming combs, cleaning brush, stand and charging power cord

Guide Review - Philips Norelco BodyGroom 2030

I first tried the Philips Norelco Bodygroom with the shaving attachment dry to shave my brother’s few small patches of back hair. Other times I’ve just used regular hair clippers without a guard to shave it off. I saw a huge difference in the results. While the regular clippers often left his skin pink and a with bit of stubble, this body grooming tool was definitely gentler on the skin and gave him a much closer shave thanks to the special shaving foils used. I would highly recommend this for shaving the body over using regular clippers or a standard razor!

I then asked him to use it on his body when he showered, so he could see how it works wet. Where he exactly groomed, I don’t really want to know. But he did share that he used one of the guards for trimming, and it was quick, easy and comfortable. My brother is one of those people that is always in a rush. So I wasn’t surprised when he told me that he dropped the Bodygroom in the shower a couple times. Well it kept on ticking. This is no hunk of junk, but made solid.

I love that the tool has two trimming combs that each can be easily adjusted to one of the five different lengths because many guys want to take down some body areas a bit, but make other places really short. The extra sensitive comb is suggested for cleaning up the groin area and underarms. While the extra large comb works better for trimming down large areas like your chest, legs and shoulders. And even if you want to shave all your hair totally down, trimming it shorter first before using the shaving attachment will help you get smoother results.

5 Vitamins for Healthy Skin

Some vitamins – in pill form – have been shown to have antioxidant qualities. Several skin care companies have incorporated these vitamins into their product lines in hope of slowing the aging process – or at least the appearance of it.

Buyer beware: The FDA doesn't regulate supplements in skin care products, and dermatologists are only beginning to study the effects of vitamins applied topically. While antioxidants applied to the skin seem like they should reduce free radicals, we’re a long way from knowing for sure.

With that caveat in mind, here are 5 of the most frequently used vitamins for healthy skin.

Vitamin E

The Body Shop: Vitamin E Facial OilImage provided by The Body Shop

Using Vitamin E in skin care is thought to have multiple benefits to your skin. It is a potent antioxidant that is thought to fight off free radicals that cause the signs of aging. Some examples of free radicals are smoke, pollutants and excess sun.

Vitamin E is also a great moisturizing ingredient that is found naturally in our bodies. It is found in many skin care lines, which makes it easy to find, but it is also available as a supplement at any drugstore. It's easy to poke a hole in the capsule and squeeze out the Vitamin E gel and apply right to your skin.

The Body Shop has an entire line of Vitamin E skin care products. Pictured here is their Vitamin E Facial Oil.

Vitamin A

ZO Skin HealthImage courtesy PriceGrabber

Are you familiar with the anti-aging (and anti-acne) superstar "retinol"? If so, then you're familiar with Vitamin A and the great things it can do for your skin.

Vitamin A forces your skin cells to turn over faster, bringing new fresh skin cells to the surface. It can cause some irritation to your skin, and many people using prescription-strength have to start slow, applying only every couple of days.

Using Vitamin A increases your skin's sensitivity to the sun, so use ample amounts of sunscreen. Results will take time to achieve.

Your best bet is to get your Vitamin A from your dermatologist who can educate you and give you a personalized dose. But a potent (yet expensive) over-the-counter line of products using Vit A is ZO Skin Health.

Vitamin K

MD Skincare Lift and Lighten Eye CreamImage provided by Sephora

If you've been searching for an eye cream that will get rid of the dark circles under your eyes, you've likely come across one with Vitamin K inside.

While dark circles under the eyes can be caused by numerous reasons, they are typically visible because of leaking capillaries under your skin. The skin under your eyes is thin, which makes the leaking capillaries visible as dark circles.

It is often recommended to look at your stress level, sleep schedule and smoking habits when trying to get rid of the circles. And concealers work wonders, but if you still can't banish those dark circles, try an eye cream with Vitamin K, like MD Skincare: Lift and Lighten Eye Cream which is believed to actually constrict the capillaries under your skin.

Vitamin C

EmerginC: Vitamin C SerumImage provided by EmerginC

Vitamin C is another super-star antioxidant found in citrus fruit. This is another ingredient that you'll have no problems finding in many skin care products, especially those meant for anti-aging. Vitamin C is thought to fight off free radicals, slow down the aging process and even reverse the signs of aging.

It's a great ingredient to look for in skin care lines, because the benefits to your skin are great, but know that Vitamin C has a hard time staying stable in skin care products, especially when introduced to the air. Try looking for serums and moisturizers that come in an airless chamber pumps to keep the air out of the bottle.

EmerginC's Vitamin C Serum pictured here is a good example of a stable Vitamin C serum on the market.

Vitamin B

Olay: Total EffectsImage courtesy Pricegrabber

Vitamin B is thought to be a great addition to your skin care product, especially if you have dry skin or are looking to decrease age spots. Using products with Vitamin B may also help your skin's appearance by evening out the overall tone as well. In fact, it's showing great acne-fighting properties as well.

You'll may notice the label will read B-3, B-5, B-6 B-12, etc...all which are forms of Vitamin B. And you'll definitely have your choice of product lines and price points with Vitamin B in them.

A good drugstore line with Vitamin B is Olay Total Effects, which contain 7 vitamins, including Vitamin B. They have an entire line from cleansers to serums to moisturizers with Vitamin B in them.

Bliss Philips Bikini Perfect

The Bottom Line

Bliss Philips Bikini Perfect is everything you want an electric razor to be and more. Perfect to have for those quick touch ups before your next wax.

Pros

  • Simple to use
  • Can be used wet or dry
  • Many attachments for you to choose from
  • Cordless and rechargeable

Cons

  • Not as close of a shave as a manual razor
  • The eyebrow attachment was not of any real use
  • Your husband may use this behind your back

Description

  • Manufacturer: Philips
  • Usage: Personal trimmer for hair removal
  • Average Price: $49.99 - $59.99
  • Options: Bikini Perfect Deluxe or Bikini Perfect Deluxe- Spa Edition
  • Kit Includes: Cordless trimmer with six attachments: trimmer, comb, epilator, micro shaver, micro trimmer and eyebrow comb in a bliss drawstring travel bag. Some bliss products are also included (exact items depend on which version)

Guide Review- Bliss Philips Bikini Perfect Deluxe

As you may know, I ‘m not a big razor girl. I like that I can get a wax and be carefree for weeks. But…I know there will be times I‘ll be 'chia pet' (like in between waxes). I also have the problem of ingrown hair, so I hate shaving and absolutely refuse!

Well, I haven’t waxed for a long while because I ‘ve been using the Bliss Phillips Bikini Perfect. It is a wet/dry electric razor. Well, it’s more than that. It’s everything you want in an electric razor to be and more.

This is a wonderful tool to keep around for a long time. Not only does it have the typical razor head, it comes with other attachments from trimming to pulling the hair totally out. There's also a bag to carry it all and a sample of bliss lemon+sage body butter for smooth skin.

Standard Razor or Something Special?

I thought I was going to use the razor and write a typical review about an electric razor. Nope, not today. I absolutely love this system because it’s simple to use and it works great. The epilator was a little distressing at first, but after the initial use it became easy as pie. The interchangeable heads were simple to change. They weren’t wobbly and felt like they locked together tightly even after several exchanges.

The eyebrow trimmer left much to be desired, so that just hangs out in the bag. I would stay away from it because one slip of the hand, and you’ll look like Whoopi in one second flat!

In the shower, the system was amazing and the best part is that it works better without any type of shaving cream or gel. Well, I guess you’ll be saving money there.

It doesn't shave as close as a new, manual razor but it was pretty close. Coarse hair was no match for this bad boy, which brings me to the next negative aspect of this system. You will, and I repeat, have to hide this from others. I assure you once they find it, they will use it. My husband has confiscated it and even with his extremely coarse facial hair, he has been using it. I guess I can’t complain too much, at least he’s shaving.

My skin has been soft and hairless since I started using this Philips-Bliss masterpiece. I still will get waxed (get bikini wax directions), but it’s much less often now. This has been the diamond in the rough that won’t leave you feeling rough.

  • Hole in package is so small that it's hard to remove just one wipe.
  • Hard to buy in the US

Description

  • A pre-moistened facial cleansing cloth that is used to wash your face.
  • No rinsing is needed after use.
  • The package contains 25 cloths and retail for $5.99.

Guide Review - Simple Skin Care: Cleansing Facial Wipes

If you've been around for awhile, you know that we think that facial cleansing cloths are a godsend. They're quick, easy and especially great for travel, the gym and late nights.

What we love about Simple Skin Care's Cleansing Facial Wipes is the size and thickness of the cloth. It's easy to get your entire face clean with one cloth, and they actually do a pretty good job of removing eye makeup, including mascara.

These pre-moistened wipes are packed in a typical plastic bag-like package with a hole in the front center where you can pull out a wipe. We did notice that the hole was especially small, and while it's nice to have a small hole in order to keep the air out, it was a bit frustrating to get only one cloth out at a time.

We did however appreciate the large sticker closure over the hole. This keeps the hole completely covered which keeps the cloths from drying out. Even if the edges start peeling back, there is still plenty of sticker to cover the hole.

The cloths are free from oil, alcohol, perfume and dyes. (They do contain parabens, if you look for those.)

Simple Skin Care, the #1 selling skincare brand in the UK, recently launched their brand in the United States. Currently at the time of this review, they are only available in Duane Reade stores throughout NYC as well as DuaneReade.com, but watch their US website for the upcoming launch.

Sugaring 101

Sugaring hair removal, an ancient middle-eastern practice uses an all natural paste or gel made from food-derived ingredients like sugar, water, and lemon juice to remove the hair follicle from the root. The results can last up to six weeks. While there are many recipes, only natural ingredients are used in real recipe. It's also been called sugar waxing, although not a correct term, because it's done very similar to waxing.

How Does it Work?

The two types of sugaring, using the paste and gel are performed differently. Here's how:
  • The paste. Considered the traditional technique, a warmed thick mixture is applied first in the opposite direction of hair growth and then in the direction of hair growth using the hands. It's then flicked off in the in the direction of hair growth. See this sugaring technique performed.
  • The gel. Performed similarly to waxing, the gel is applied in the direction of hair growth and removed in the opposite direction.

Learn more about these differences: Sugar Wax Vs Sugar Paste

    The Pros

    1. Someone experienced can do sugaring quickly with the paste. Large amounts of hair can be taken out at once, and finished faster than even waxing. With most waxes, you have to apply them to a limited area- remove, go to your next area- remove and so forth. With sugaring you can speed things up by applying the paste to a very large area, and it won't dry out, even if you take it off in smaller sections.
    2. Easy clean up. Both the paste and gel are water soluble, meaning you can clean off any residue left on the skin with plain water, unlike regular wax.
    3. Sugar right in your own home. Entire sugaring hair removal kits, supplies can be bought online, or you can whip your paste at home. (Be aware of conditions or circumstances in which you shouldn't sugar, and follow all instructions).
    4. Sugar paste can be applied over missed hairs. The paste is very gentle and can be put right over an area that was just sugared but missed some hairs, without fear of much irritation.
    5. Temporary results can turn into permanent. Over time, frequent sugaring can cause the hair follicle to become damaged, and stop growing hair.

    The Cons

    1. It's hard to find a pro that does technique using the paste. Some salons and spas use a wax that has been mixed with sugar, and advertise it as sugaring- but it isn't the same. Other places do use the gel, but few placed (compared to waxing) use the paste.
    2. Getting just the right consistency can be tricky. If you make your own paste at home, you'll have it get it just right for the paste to hold on to the hair.
    3. Some hair growth is needed. 1/16 of an inch is needed when using the traditional technique with the paste, which is about 2-5 days of hair growth after shaving. Using the gel requires 1/4 inch of hair growth.
    4. Lack of knowledge or cleanliness can lead to disaster. If contraindications(circumstances or conditions when you shouldn't get sugaring) are simply unknown or ignored, skin could end up extremely red, and even become scabby. Salons or spas not adhering to safe and sanitary procedures could give a client a skin infection, or even a disease.

    Ouch Factor

Okay, it's still pulling out hair from the root, but most people find it less painful than waxing. Sugaring doesn't stick to the skin as much as waxing, which means less irritation. The upper lip, chest, bikini and genital areas rank as the highest pain offenders. If you find someone experienced that uses the traditional technique using the paste, the discomfort is less because hair is removed in the natural direction of its growth (as opposed to waxing, which removes hair against hair growth).

    Sugaring Hair Removal Costs

At Home: Kits cost anywhere from $10 - $40. But you can make your own sugar paste for a couple of dollars with all natural ingredients. (Get recipe and instructions).

Professional: Sugaring hair removal is generally more expensive than waxing because it's not as commonly found. The price will also depend on where the facility is located, and type of salon or spa. A 15% - 20% gratuity on your total bill is customary and suggested.

    • Eyebrow (both eyebrows, including in-between) $10 - $50
    • Lip (skin right above upper lip) $10 - $25

Tips for a Streak-Free Tan

Can you feel it? The happiness that comes along with sun and warm weather? I sure can! With this happiness and warm weather comes the idea that everyone needs to be tan, stat. One day it's cool and spring-like and the next day brings an abundance of sunless tanner streaks on legs and arms everywhere.

And I'm not immune to the occasional streaks, either. Sunless tanners take practice and patience, but once you figure it out, you can safely glow all summer long. And if you plan on using them all summer, it's best to get started so you can hide your trial runs before the hot weather comes.

One error a lot of people make is spontaneity. While usually a good thing, spontaneity when applying self tanning lotion usually means your skin isn't fully prepared. Take a few days to properly get your skin ready for your self tanning lotion by following this Self Tanning Lotion Tips.

Excuse Me While I Hop On My Soapbox

Can you feel summer coming? Between the crisp Spring days, I can feel the hint of summer rushing at me. I see the kids outside on their bikes, the adults in their gardens or walking their dogs and I can feel it coming soon.

Do you know what else I can sense? Sunburn. Lots and lots of sunburn.

And while I try not to get all preachy on people, if there is one thing that I don't believe in, it's sunburn. (That is, unless you're stranded on a deserted island.) Here's the deal people; you can get a sunburn any time you're outside for a length of time. Even if it's cloudy or cool or not quite summer yet.

Do you know what sunburn does to your skin? It causes wrinkles, fine lines, the dreaded sun spots and potentially even skin cancer. It's not cute, or funny or something you should strive for. You shouldn't let your skin burn once so you tan easier next time. And you definitely need to protect your children's skin every day. One blistering sunburn on your child today increases their risk of skin cancer by 50% in the future. (One sunburn.)

You need to go stock up on sunscreen now so that there isn't an excuse later. And by stocking up now, you'll save yourself having to shell out three times as much at the gas station when you're out.

I heard the term "Cullen Club" from someone describing a fair-skinned friend, and I loved it. For all of you Twilight fans, will you join me in the Cullen Club? And for those of you who have no idea who the Cullens are, just promise you're going to take care of your skin this summer.

Remington i-Light Pro 6000 Reviews

Remington I light reviews, Remington iplWhen I began writing for this Site in 2008, home laser and IPL hair removal products were just making their way onto the scene. Not only have many products launched, they've been updated, created a family of systems and lowered prices along the way.

A name you already know, Remington, has an IPL (intense pulsed system) hair removal system called Remington i-Light Pro 6000 that's a bit newer on the scene here in the United States. We got our hands on two, so naturally we had two people test it out. See what they thought of the skin sensor, the pain, treatment times and what you're probably most interested in....how much hair it reduced. Check out the review.

As with all of our reviews, we love to hear your feedback and ratings. If you have used this system, please tell us about it right on the review page.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Question: AHAs - What Are AHAs and Should I Use Them In My Skin Care Regime

I read online that AHA's are a better alternative than a regular face scrub, but I'm not really sure I know what AHAs really are? Are they for everyone?

Answer:

AHAs, or Alpha Hydroxy Acids are becoming quite common in beauty products. If you've heard of a chemical peel, you've heard of AHAs.

They are certainly not new to skin care, but it wasn't until fairly recently that they became so widely available in over the counter beauty products. What AHAs are actually molecules found in fruit and milk. Your regular facial scrub exfoliates your skin manually by little particles you can feel with your fingers. This is a widely common way to exfoliate your skin, but many people like the ease and the uniformed exfoliation that comes with using AHAs. You are unable to feel any exfoliating bits, but you will definitely notice your softer smoother skin after use. Another added benefit of using AHAs is that they are known in helping with fine lines and wrinkles, as well as lightening darken spots on your skin, such as sun spots and freckles.

Another thing to remember when you are using AHAs is that your sensitivity to sun is greatly increased. Not only for the day you used the product, but for up to a week after you use it. So of course, using sunscreen is very important when using AHAs, but reapplying during the day is just as important.

Today, you can find AHAs in everything from cleansers to moisturizers, and of course exfoliators. I'd recommend finding a moisturizer or exfoliator with Alpha Hydroxy Acid to reap the most benefits. Men do great with AHAs in their moisturizers to help fight against ingrown hairs from shaving. I have been using Clarins: Bright Plus HP Brightening Peel with great results (read my review) (buy direct)

People with sensitive skin need to be especially careful when using Alpha Hydroxy Acids, as their skin could possibly react in a negative way
