You may know what to do right after your bikini wax, but what should you do in the interim until the next time? There are a few things to think about to keep ready for summer's short shorts.

When Should I Make My Next Appointment?

This will be different for everyone because hair grows at different rates. If this is your first waxing, or you haven't had one in some time there is hair underneath the skin growing that hasn't reached the surface yet. If you've had a couple of consecutive?waxing appointments, three weeks is generally going to work. Again, everyone is different and this is not a rule.

Should I Shave?

Ladies and gentleman, you can shave after a wax. But this will almost always put you back to square one because shaving leaves the hair with a blunt end and can make it appear thicker and darker. If you can wait to continue waxing, you will save yourself a lot of headaches. You may even notice a difference in the texture, color and amount of hair over time with frequent appointments. The worst part is waiting for your hair to grow out again!

To Tweeze or Not To Tweeze?

I know a couple of people who like to tweeze any hair they can. After waxing for a while, your hair does tend to come out easier. However, I recommend not tweezing. Every hair you tweeze will set you back. Our hair grows in three cycles. When you wax your body knows there is no hair and it needs to start growing. If you tweeze some hair as it begins to sprout, you are sending these hairs into different stages. So the next time you go to wax, you might see new hair growth sooner than?you did the first time.

Scrub, Scrub, Scrub After a Bikini Waxing!

I am a firm believer of exfoliation. I don't mean scrubbing until your skin is raw, but giving it a light buffing regularly in between bikini waxes.

Manual exfoliators

• Oily skin. Try a salt based salt scrub (compare prices) about two to three times per week.
• Normal to dry skin. Try a sugar based salt scrub (compare prices) at least once, up to three times per week.

Chemical exfoliators
Using a bump-fighting product like Tend Skin will also help keep ingrown hair away and encourage fresh looking skin. Remember that we have different skin and hair, so what works for one many not work for another. Women and men?obviously aren't exactly the same. But I do recommend men heading the same advice. Keep with the waxing and try not to give up. You will be hair free and happy.

As you may know, I ‘m not a big razor girl. I like that I can get a wax and be carefree for weeks. But…I know there will be times I‘ll be 'chia pet' (like in between waxes). I also have the problem of ingrown hair, so I hate shaving and absolutely refuse!

Well, I haven’t waxed for a long while because I ‘ve been using the Bliss Phillips Bikini Perfect. It is a wet/dry electric razor. Well, it’s more than that. It’s everything you want in an electric razor to be and more.

This is a wonderful tool to keep around for a long time. Not only does it have the typical razor head, it comes with other attachments from trimming to pulling the hair totally out. There's also a bag to carry it all and a sample of bliss lemon+sage body butter for smooth skin.

Standard Razor or Something Special?

I thought I was going to use the razor and write a typical review about an electric razor. Nope, not today. I absolutely love this system because it’s simple to use and it works great. The epilator was a little distressing at first, but after the initial use it became easy as pie. The interchangeable heads were simple to change. They weren’t wobbly and felt like they locked together tightly even after several exchanges.

The eyebrow trimmer left much to be desired, so that just hangs out in the bag. I would stay away from it because one slip of the hand, and you’ll look like Whoopi in one second flat!

In the shower, the system was amazing and the best part is that it works better without any type of shaving cream or gel. Well, I guess you’ll be saving money there.

It doesn't shave as close as a new, manual razor but it was pretty close. Coarse hair was no match for this bad boy, which brings me to the next negative aspect of this system. You will, and I repeat, have to hide this from others. I assure you once they find it, they will use it. My husband has confiscated it and even with his extremely coarse facial hair, he has been using it. I guess I can’t complain too much, at least he’s shaving.

My skin has been soft and hairless since I started using this Philips-Bliss masterpiece. I still will get waxed (get bikini wax directions), but it’s much less often now. This has been the diamond in the rough that won’t leave you feeling rough.

Hair Removal Creams for the Bikini Zone?

Doing hair removal at home is definitely convenient and much cheaper than going to a salon or spa. The easiest ways to do so for the body are normally shaving and using hair removal creams (a.k.a depilatories). After Bikini Wax Tips

Hopefully the worst is over. Now what do we do after the bikini wax? We want to maintain the hair free bikini line for as long as possible without irritating skin and getting ingrown hair. Here are some things that you should and shouldn't do post waxing.

• Avoid the sun. Stay clear of the sun's rays at least 48 hours and until the redness has gone away. I know you've just had the hair removed so you can rock the bikini, but two things can happen. First, burning is easier than before. Second, you can be more sensitive to the sun and end up with dark skin spots, especially if you're taking certain medications.
• Let your skin breathe. This is important. Do not slip on skintight clothing because this will cause irritation and possible ingrown hair. Also don't touch the area. We use our hands to do almost everything and those germs would love to jump onto our freshly waxed skin and live happily causing infection.
• When soaking and steam isn't good. Shower, but please do not take a bath or get in any type pool for the rest of day after the service. Sauans and steam rooms need to be avoided for the next two days.
• No lotion until the redness goes away. Redness is a sign of sensitized skin. If you have a problem with overly red or stinging skin try Relax and Wax No Trauma Momma. Regular lotions can irritate your skin even more, so wait until the redness disappears, which varies from person to person.
• Exfoliate. Keep that dead skin from ruining your bikini wax by clogging pores and causing ingrown hair. Two full days after your service lightly exfoliate with a body scrub, loofah or ayate washcloth (compare prices) if your skin is not red or irritated. How To Wax Bikini Area

Did waxing your bikini area end up in a mess? We're here to give you the secret- Hard wax! It's specifically made for coarse hair, doesn't require a strip, and actually 'shrink wraps' the hair making them easier to come out.

These instructions are to do a regular bikini wax at home, removing the hair outside your panty line. Unless you are a gymnast, I don’t think you can do a Brazilian bikini wax on yourself. Leave that one to the pros.

Difficulty: Average

Time Required: 45 minutes to 1 hour

Here's How:

1. Buy waxing kit. I recommend using hard wax for bikini area because the hair is coarse.Hard wax (compare prices) goes on smooth, but hardens so that it doesn’t require a strip to be removed. The following directions are for the use of hard wax.
2. Have enough hair. Grow bikini hair out to at least 1/4" long. Use hair clippers to trim hair down if longer than 1/2". Scissors don't work well for trimming because you run the risk of making some hair too short.
3. Cleanse skin. Use pre-wax cleanser on bikini area and apply pre-epilation oil which works with hard wax. Don’t over do it on the oil, more isn’t better.
4. Apply wax. Using an applicator, apply wax evenly FIRST the opposite direction of hair growth, and then WITH the direction of hair growth to a large area (about 4 ?” long and 2 ?” wide)in the same stroke. Don’t stop at the edge of where the hair grows, go passed that point. You will use the part of the wax that isn’t attached to hair as a tab to remove it. The wax will dull as it hardens, and will not be tacky. If the wax isn’t hard enough when removed, it won’t take away all of the hair.
5. Remove hair. Lightly flick up a small part of the wax that isn’t attached to hair on the end to be used as a tab once cooled. Say hair grows from left to right- the end is on the right side. Hold skin taut with one hand, and remove wax in opposite direction of hair growth in one quick pull, all the way to the other side. Don't pull up, which might be your natural inclination. Press hand down on skin to help relieve some of the pain, after wax is removed. (Sounds silly, but it works!)
6. Repeat. Work your way waxing the bikini area, repeating steps 4 and 5.
7. Get missed hairs. Use tweezers to remove any hairs missed by the wax.
8. Clean skin. Remove any remaining residue with wax remover.
9. Soothe skin. Apply an after-wax cleansing product or an aloe based gel.
10. After care. The bikini area has a tendency for ingrown hairs. Two days after wax, lightly exfoliate area to try to avoid ingrown hairs and try Flawless Ingrown Hair Serum (read review) if you do end up getting any.

Tips:

1. Waxing can cause red bumps, ingrown hairs and bruising. Read more about how to prevent and stay clear of waxing side effects.
2. Practice using the wax on a small part of your body, like your arm so you get the feel of it. Always test small amount of wax on hand before putting on bikini zone, to make sure it’s warm, not hot.

4. Take an asprin or ibuprofen 30 - 45 minutes before waxing, and apply a numbing spray (compare prices) if you're concerned about the 'ouch factor'. Read: Top Ten Tips to Reduce Waxing Pain for the full run-down.
5. A couple weeks before waxing your bikini area, shave exactly what hair you want removed and make the bikini lines even on both sides. Once it grows back it will make waxing the area you need to remove hair easier to follow.

Let's Start with the Razor

The Venus Embrace razor keeps true to the Gillette name and offers a close shave every time. It is well made and easy to handle. The razor has 5 blades for a very close shave. The razor also offers a moisturizing strip to help with the gliding of the razor.

I Love the Trimmer

The trimmer is awesome. It is a single blade razor with a protective comb that does not come off. The trimmer is very, very easy to use. Other bikini trimmers I have tried seem to work well, but most take batteries and some skill. The Venus trimmer does not use batteries and it's also very easy to get an even trim. Simple and works every time! I did not have any hair pulling and I have used it for 20 consecutive trims and it's still sharp.

Now the Lotion

The Olay bikini lotion comes in this Venus Bikini Razor Kit. The lotion is moisturizing and leaves your skin feeling clean. It seemed to hydrate very well. I didn't get any ingrown hair and razor burn was has not been a word in my vocabulary since I began using this kit.

The price of beauty is not all that much when you purchase the Veet Salon Line Ready to Use Wax Strips for Face & Bikini. These are ready to use strips that can be cut to size if needed. I have to say these are one of the best waxes on a strip sold right now.

I asked a client if she would be my tester for these hair removal strips and she was as curious as I was. She emphatically agreed and we went to work.

Let's Try the Brows

I started with her eyebrows because the strips were not all that big and I had not seen this client for about three months so I knew I was going to have some work to do.

I had her lay down and I removed the strips from the package. I cut them to a smaller size and I warmed them up in my hands. I placed the strip on her brows and pressed. I held her skin taught and pulled. Off came the hair and all of the wax with it- beautiful, simple and easy. I continued and removed all of the unwanted hair from her brows.

Now the Bikini

After I was finished, I began working on her bikini line. I had the same results, except she had a lot of hair and I had to dip into my regular wax for the rest. Now I only blame my client and not the strips because, in her words, she was a Yeti.

Watch Out for This

I did notice that if I didn't completely warm the wax in my hands, it would stay on her skin. After I was finished, I used the wipes that were included in the box to remove the residual wax. It did the job but they were very greasy.

Meaning, what hair in your bikini zone would you think will be left, or do you automatically assume a Brazilian refers to removing everything? Hollywood Bikini Wax

Question: What's the difference between a Brazilian and Hollywood wax?

Answer: The terms have been used interchangeably, but there are differences. Brazilian waxes often leave a small strip, triangle or oval shape piece of hair in the front, while taking all the hair in between all the way to the back by your bum. Waxing Hollywood style removes all of the hair, front all the way to the back.

Names are often created at salons and spas so that you know how much you're paying, and they book the right amount of time while having an idea of much hair you're looking to remove. Just waxing the bikini line is much less work and doesn't require as much time or product as waxing all of the hair. So the price points vary for these different styles.

While there are a lot of names or styles for bikini waxes, most people determine for themselves how much hair they want left or removed. You don’t need to be locked into any one kind of bikini wax, just go with your personal preference.

Brazilian and Hollywood Wax: Don't Try it First

I recommend working your way from a regular bikini wax, to a Brazilian and then remove it all. Waxing your bikini area bald from the get-go may be more than you bargained for. Removing hair from the root gets easier over time.

Just make sure when you do get your wax, that you have fully communicated with the technician your preferences of what hair you want removed and left. If you do decide on getting something like a Brazilian or Hollywood wax, be sure to take special care before and after your wax.

Women aren't the only ones getting hairless. Men are also experimenting with different bikini waxes, from a clean up to removing it all.

Bikini Waxing Styles

You may not know there are many bikini waxing styles or types to choose from. Whether you want a little or a lot off, you can select the one that's best for you.

Just keep in mind that every salon and spa has their own names or versions of how much, or what hair is to be removed for the price on their menu. And just because a facility offers bikini waxes, doesn't automatically mean they will do all the styles for both women and men. This article is describing the styles as they would relate to women.

Basic Bikini Waxing Styles:

• Regular Bikini Wax: Removes the hair outside the panty line.

  When to choose: If it's your first bikini wax, or are just looking for a clean up.

• Full Bikini Wax: Takes the sides of the bikini line deeper than a regular bikini wax, and can also include waxing some hair on top to make a more defined ‘triangle’ area, or trimming down the hair left shorter.

  When to choose: You still want to keep hair, but want more definition than a clean-up.

• French Bikini Wax: Takes all hair off the in the front (except a small strip) and continues to right before the back. It doesn't take hair off from the back like a Brazilian (see below).

  When to choose: You want the area basically pretty smooth with most hair removed, but don't want to take any hair away from your behind.

• Brazilian Bikini Wax: Takes all hair off the bikini line, front all the way to the back (yes by your bum). Sometimes a small landing strip or triangle is left in the front.

  When to choose: The perfect option if you wear a thong, or want to be completely or almost hairless in front and back.

  Men's Brazilian Waxing

• Hollywood: Where a Brazilian may leave you with some hair left, a Hollywood removes all of it. The bottom line, you won't have any genital hair left.

  When to choose: You absolutely don't want any hair in the front, in-between or in the back. But I wouldn't recommend it for your first bikini wax.

  Remember, you're in control of your service. So please tell the technician your preferences of where and how much hair you want removed or left. They can adjust the style to make it your own.
