What is Microdermabrasion?

If you're starting to notice fine lines and wrinkles creeping in, microdermabrasion might be just what you're looking for. But what is microdermabrasion, and where can you get it?

There are two types of microdermabrasion; in-office and at-home. At-home abrasions can give good results if money is an issue, but for best results, in-office microdermabrasion is recommended.

Depending on your skin type, it is recommended that you get microdermabrasions in sessions. You may need 6-10 sessions to get the desired look and feel. When you go for your microdermabrasion, the esthetician or Doctor will start out with a skin evaluation. Speak up on what's bothering you, and be assured they will notice something you probably didn't. They will clean your skin with a cleansing gel, apply a toner-like product before beginning, and may give you goggles to protect your eye. A small pen-like wand is placed on your face and moved in small swipes which will blast crystals to remove the dead skin cells as well as vacuum them up as you go. While you will obviously feel it, there should be no discomfort.

The entire procedure lasts between 15 minutes to 1 hour depending on your skin type. When you're finished, your skin may feel a bit sensitive and will look a little pink. You will notice right away the change in texture; your face will feel very soft after one treatment.

Microdermabrasion can get rid of or diminish fine lines, acne scars and skin discoloration as well as rejuvenate dull looking skin and diminish pore appearance. Done fairly close together, usually 7-10 days apart, your skin will be transformed after 6-10 treatments.

Cost varies depending on if you go to a spa or a dermatologist, but it usually starts out around $100 per session and goes up from there. While not cheap, microdermabrasion is one of the most popular non-surgical treatments done.
