Brazilian Waxing for Men

Bikini and Brazilian waxing for men is in the top three areas for hair removal. There are also many different ideas as to what the service entails and their names. Here are some examples of styles available for this type of service and why you should seek out a professional.
  1. BSC (back, sack, crack). This is exactly as it sounds. Although the back is not part of the Brazilian, the sack and crack can be. The hair is removed from the area between the buttocks and from the scrotum. This is done carefully and with professionalism and there's no need to be shy or worried as long as you are dealing with a professional who is experienced.
  2. Bikini line. This is the same like for women. If you had a bikini type bottom on, picture all the hair that shows around the edges gone. It's much less invasive than the above-mentioned waxing but still leaves quite a bit of hair.
  3. Strip and bikini (with clipping down the front). Basically this is the same as the bikini but more hair is removed and a landing strip is left. Generally the hair is also trimmed down to about a ? of an inch.
  4. The full Brazilian- This is the works. You can expect all genital hair removed. And I mean everything. From front to back (yes, your behind) you will be hair free. You may want to consider getting your actual back done as well if it's very hairy, for a seamless flow.

Of course you don't have to choose just one style. You can customize your bikini wax to include exactly how much hair you want to keep and be removed.

Going to the Pros

I highly recommend going to a licensed and trained individual who has worked on men for some time. Ask around to find the best of the best. You can expect professionalism, cleanliness and no embarrassment from someone who knows what they are doing.

At Home?

Trying this yourself at home will probably be a disaster. You will leave yourself open to bruising and ingrown hair because you probably will not be able to get the correct angles to remove the hair properly. You can also burn yourself and cause blisters, especially on your genitals.

There may be a few of you who have mastered the art of waxing yourself but for most it will be one of the hardest things to do on your own. And who wants to walk around with wax in places because they couldn't reach around to remove it! Leave this to a professional and enjoy a little pampering and a couple of hair free weeks.

Brazilian Wax: What To Expect

Question: What Can I Expect at a Brazilian Wax Job?

Answer: Well, it’s generally considered a service and not a job, but I understand what you mean. Not all salons and spas do things exactly the same, but I’ll tell you what you can generally expect.
  • Ask questions. Hopefully you have a referral from a friend or family for a good technician to make an appointment with because it will have a huge impact on your experience. If not, seek out salons and spas that specialize in hair removal, not just offer it on the side. Call and ask what hair their Brazilian wax removes, so you’re not in for any surprises. Some facilities won’t remove hair from the behind and others won’t perform a Brazilian on a man.
  • Are you a candidate? If you have never visited the salon or spa for any type of waxing you should be asked to fill out a questionnaire to make sure you don’t have any circumstances or conditions that would not make you a candidate for waxing.
  • Get started. You will be lead to a private room and asked to remove your pants and possibly your underwear. Some salons will give you disposable thong panties to make you more comfortable, while others will have you nude from the waist down. A styrofoam cup is often given to men to cover their genitals. (No, I’m not kidding.) The technician will leave the room to let you get ready and lie on a facial bed.
  • The consult. Once the technician returns, they will go over how the process works and what your expectations are. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or voice your preferences if you want to stray from the traditional Brazilian. Like for example, you don’t want hair removed from your behind.
  • The prep. Hair needs to be at least ?” long for the wax to grab onto. If the hair is really long then the tech will have to trim it down a bit with scissors or clippers. Waxing hair that is too long will make it more painful, and also has more of a tendency for breaking hair above or below the skin’s surface, instead of coming out of the root.

The area will be cleansed and powder or oil will be applied to your skin. Most technicians use hard wax because it works great on coarse hair, so oil which helps protect the skin will be applied. Otherwise powder will be put on the skin to absorb any oils and help the wax not stick as much to the skin for soft wax.

  • The process. Wearing gloves, the technician will apply warm wax on the hair with an applicator. Hard wax doesn’t require a strip, so will dry a bit before it’s removed. With soft wax, a strip of cloth or muslin will be put over the wax. The technician will hold your skin taut before removing the wax in a quick pull so it’s less painful. They will continue to work in sections until hair is removed.

Some technicians will use a towel to cover the area they’re not working on if you’re not wearing disposable panties to give you more modesty, while others find it gets in their way.

You will have to lift your legs up, possibly to your chest or even get on your knees so the tech can get to all of the hair. The technician may even ask for your help to hold skin taut at some part of the process. An experienced person will make you feel relaxed and perform the service professionally. Don’t worry, they aren’t thinking about how you look.

  • The clean up. Because wax shouldn't be applied over skin more than once, any stray hairs missed by the wax will be cleaned up with tweezers. A special product to help remove wax residue will be applied, and then something to help calm the skin. You're all done, and they will leave the room to let you change.
  • The post care. Waxing can do more than just leave you hairless. Redness, ingrown hairs and bumps are very common in the bikini area. Learn more about waxing side effects.

A Brazilian Wax- Gloves for Them, Gloves for You

It's a a good thing that some technicians wear gloves for every type of waxing service. But some will only use them for body waxing, especially a Brazilian wax. I'm sure you don't want them touching your bikini zone without them, and let's face it, they don't want to go gloveless either.

Often with Brazilians you may be asked to help in the service holding your skin taut. If they do ask for assistance but don't give you gloves also to wear, just ask for pair. We use our hands almost every time we make a move and touch countless things. Even if we've just washed our hands before the service, we're on the safer side with less chances of bacteria getting onto our freshly waxed skin causing irritation, redness, infection and pimples...by gloving up.

Brazilian Wax Interview

A Brazilian waxing doesn't have to be a scary experience if you go to the right technician. Expert waxer and educator Leonard Serrani answers top questions on this specialty service. Learn more about him in his profile.

The Brazilian wax is very popular, but not all technicians know how to perform this type of bikini wax safely. What should clients be looking for when searching for a salon and technician to get this specialty service?

This is a great question. Waxing has become a specialty over the past years with the evolution of full body and Brazilian waxing. Not every salon or spa has the expertise to perform a safe and effective Brazilian wax. Keep in mind that if standard waxing techniques are used in your most sensitive areas, you stand a good chance of being bruised. This will result in soreness for several days or up to a week. Here are some of the things you will want to be aware of when choosing that perfect salon.
  1. Has the technician been formally trained in Brazilian waxing?
  2. How many Brazilian waxes do they perform weekly?
  3. Do they use a NEW wax applicator every time the wax is applied? If they use the same applicator each time the wax is applied, there is a good chance the wax is contaminated. Find another salon.
  4. Does the technician wear gloves? You would be surprised how many technicians STILL wax without gloves. The nail is a bed of bacteria and the most common is Staphylococcus. This can cause anything from impetigo to toxic shock and even skin eating diseases. When your hair is removed from the root it is extremely susceptible to infection. When your technician wears gloves, it minimizes the chance of infection.
  5. Does the technician use hard wax and strip wax? Hard wax is the type of wax that hardens and is removed without a strip. (Hard wax should be used in the more sensitive areas. This will avoid damaging the skin on your very sensitive labia area).

This is one of the most 'close contact' services at the spa. So what is the etiquette for a client when getting a Brazilian?

Each salon is different. Proper etiquette is simply a professional approach by your technician. You will probably be given a towel and asked to remove your pants. Yes, your panties too. Some salons might offer you a disposable panty, however, they tend to get in the way and make it more difficult to reach certain areas. Your technician may talk to you to help relieve some of your nerves.

I talk to my clients and explain to them what I'm doing and why. I have found that educating my clients results in a more relaxed service. Don't be shy! Your technician is concentrating on hair growth and skin texture. The fact you are naked from the waist down is completely irrelevant to the technician.

You may be asked to flip over and get on your knees when they wax your bum. If you are not comfortable with this simply inform the technician that you do not want to be waxed there. I personally do not like that position. I have my clients simply bring their knees to their chest. That allows for perfect removal of the hair down under.

We know sanitation is extremely important for waxing in general to keep clients safe from infection and diseases. Why is it even more paramount for Brazilians?

When performing a Brazilian, sanitation becomes even more important. If the proper steps are not taken, you stand a good chance of becoming ill or contracting an infection. Not to worry! If you choose a salon that follows a few simple sanitary rules you will be fine.
  1. Make sure they use a NEW applicator each and every time they apply wax to your skin.
  2. Make sure they wear gloves.
  3. Make sure the tweezers or any other instruments they use are sanitized.

What possible side effects or issues can a person run into when getting this specialty wax?

If your wax is performed by a seasoned professional, there will be no adverse side effects or soreness. You can expect a little redness for a few hours but that should be it. If your skin is very sensitive you may be red for up to 24 hours.

If performed by a novice the side effects can be more extensive. If you are sore for more then a few hours, chances are your technician removed some skin. You might remain sore for up to a week and could scab.

All in all a Brazilian wax is one of the greatest services you can have done. It will eliminate shaving for up to 4 weeks and leave your skin soft and smooth. My clients tell me they are now spoiled! Shaving is no longer an option. If you need additional information on Brazilian waxing you can visit our website at professional-skin.com

Brazilian Waxing Tips

These Brazilian waxing tips will help you prepare your skin, take the pain factor down and minimize bumps and irritation afterwards. A lot of women and men opt for this service because they like the feeling of the entire bikini area being totally, or almost hair-free. While you need to be cautious any time you remove hair, because of its specialty nature, it should be treated with extra care.

Pre Brazilian Waxing Prep:

  • Particularly for women. Your skin is often more sensitive the time near your your period, and waxing can be more painful than normal. So your appointment shouldn't be any closer than a couple of days before or after your period. Most places understandably won't perform a Brazilian while you're on your period.
  • Cleanliness. Shower and lightly exfoliate your entire bikini area right before your appointment using warm, not hot water. Make sure you're extra clean.
  • Skip this step. Don't use any lotions in bikini area.
  • Hair for now. You need some hair growth for the wax to hold onto, but not too long which can make the waxing hurt more than it needs to. Let the technician trim hair down to just the right length at your appointment, or follow the salon's specific instructions for trimming.
  • Pain preventers. Take an aspirin or Tylenol 30- 45 minutes before your appointment if you're worried about pain.

Post Brazilian Waxing Care:

  • Watch your fashion choices. Don't wear tight panties for the next few days.
  • Hands off. Keep hands away from touching freshly waxed skin, as this can encourage irritation or small pimples (see more: prevent side effects of waxing).
  • Opt for a shower. Don't take a hot bath for the rest of the day.
  • Too hot. No tanning beds, saunas or steam rooms for the next two days.
  • Short-term abstinence. Sexual activity should be avoided for at least 24 - 48 hours.
  • Exfoliate. Two full days later use a mild exfoliator. My pick, an Ayate washcloth which gently exfoliates skin alone wet, or can be used with your favorite body wash, but is more mold-resistant than loofahs. Compare Ayate washcloth prices.
  • Fight the bumps. If you get any ingrown hairs try Tend Skin, a huge favorite for getting rid of pesky ingrowns. Compare Tend Skin prices.
