EpilFree

EpilFree is a professional system developed in Europe taking two liquids used in tandem after waxing (or other method that removes the entire hair follicle from the root) to gradually reduce and stop further growth of hair in the treated areas.

It's available in three concentrated serums (facial, intimate care and body care) each made for different hair types and specific body or facial areas. Only available through salons and spas, the hair removal and system is performed by trained professionals.

How Does EpilFree Work?

After the hair is removed and the follicle is empty, the first liquid is applied and massaged into the skin in the opposite direction of the hair growth for three to five minutes. An inhibitor, the second part of the system is sprayed on and also massaged into the skin, again in the opposite direction of hair growth.

Is it For Everyone?

The system can be used safely on anyone, whatever your hair or skin color and hair type. Because it's not targeting pigment like most laser hair removal, but the actual hair follicle, hair or skin color is not an issue.

How Effective is It?

EpilFree generally takes between two and ten treatments to achieve desired results. If hormonal issues are involved, it may be more. The company says a noticeable difference should be seen after the very first treatment. Each Epilfree treatment should continue to reduce the number of functioning follicles, and as a result, reduce the amount of hair that returns in the treated area. Like any other professional service, the overall results will vary depending on the person giving the treatment.

Is EpilFree Painful?

The only pain you have to worry about is when the actual hair is removed from waxing or by another method. The two part system of products do not hurt.

The Costs

While salons and spas won't be charging exactly the same for each EpilFree service, here's a general figure of what it might run. Prices for men will be slightly higher.
  • Brows: $35
  • Chin: $50
  • Full Face: $99
  • Underarms: $55
  • Full Legs: $175
  • Full Back: $175
  • Bikini: $65
  • Brazilian: $105

Schick Hydro Silk Razor

schick hydro silk, schick razors, women's razors

Schick Hydro 3 has been my go-to razor even though they're marketed to men because I like them and picked up a couple packs when they were on sale and had some coupons. But of course I had to get the Hydro Silk Razor for women, new from Schick with five blades and built-in serum and skin guards, made to moisturize and prevent razor burn.

I let my daughter try it before myself. And she was really excited to give her opinion. Let me first say that because I write about hair removal, she is used to very good shaving products and didn't have to go through the route of learning to shave with cheap disposables, and the oh-so-fun razor burn, nicks and cuts.

She said, "It wasn't the closest shave in the world, but my skin felt really soft."

I put on a fresh blade and gave it a whirl myself. With the first swipe, I also thought it didn't give a very close shave, but it took a couple to get it smooth. I don't have dry skin and always use good shaving cream or gel, so the built-in serum didn't make a difference for me. However, Jen Adkins, our Skincare Guide really loves the Schick Hydro Silk Razor and uses it without shaving cream (read her post).

They are pricey, a four-pack blade refill costs about $16 (compare prices). I personally like Schick Quattro better, and they're less expensive at about $12 for four refills (compare prices).

Do You Use Deodorant Soap? Here's Why You Should Stop.

Don't want to give up the cheap price of your drugstore bar soap?? Maybe after reading this, you'll change your mind.

We found an old edition of Allure that had an interesting bit of information about soap and your skin: It takes approximately eight hours for your skin to replenish the moisture lost during a shower when you use a regular soap. 8 hours!? No wonder you're dry and itchy and flaky.? Your skin doesn't have to itch.? You have options.

If you want to splurge, go for a good bar of handmade soap.? Etsy is full of them! In fact, I posted one on my About.com Facebook page last night and someone grabbed it right away.? These soaps are made with pure cocoa butter, shea butter, coconut oil and many other butters and oils that moisturize on top of cleanse.? Your skin will drink in the moisture from the soap instead of the soap sucking the moisture out.

Dove soap is also known for hydrating the skin, but our best recommendation is to go for a good homemade bar of soap. Don't forget to moisturize right out of the shower.? We love Argan oil.

DIY - Tinted Moisturizer

I typically pump two or three pumps of moisturizer into my hand because I want more moisturizer than foundation. But if you want to conceal your face a bit more than that, go ahead and pump even amounts.

What is Microdermabrasion?

If you're starting to notice fine lines and wrinkles creeping in, microdermabrasion might be just what you're looking for. But what is microdermabrasion, and where can you get it?

There are two types of microdermabrasion; in-office and at-home. At-home abrasions can give good results if money is an issue, but for best results, in-office microdermabrasion is recommended.

Depending on your skin type, it is recommended that you get microdermabrasions in sessions. You may need 6-10 sessions to get the desired look and feel. When you go for your microdermabrasion, the esthetician or Doctor will start out with a skin evaluation. Speak up on what's bothering you, and be assured they will notice something you probably didn't. They will clean your skin with a cleansing gel, apply a toner-like product before beginning, and may give you goggles to protect your eye. A small pen-like wand is placed on your face and moved in small swipes which will blast crystals to remove the dead skin cells as well as vacuum them up as you go. While you will obviously feel it, there should be no discomfort.

The entire procedure lasts between 15 minutes to 1 hour depending on your skin type. When you're finished, your skin may feel a bit sensitive and will look a little pink. You will notice right away the change in texture; your face will feel very soft after one treatment.

Microdermabrasion can get rid of or diminish fine lines, acne scars and skin discoloration as well as rejuvenate dull looking skin and diminish pore appearance. Done fairly close together, usually 7-10 days apart, your skin will be transformed after 6-10 treatments.

Cost varies depending on if you go to a spa or a dermatologist, but it usually starts out around $100 per session and goes up from there. While not cheap, microdermabrasion is one of the most popular non-surgical treatments done.

9 Highest Reviewed Face Serums Under \$30

The best skin care product to splurge on is a facial serum. Serums are used under your moisturizer and have the ability to penetrate deeper into your skin's layers. Many serums definitely fall into the "splurge" category, but don't think you're out of luck if you're on a budget.

We think that the best place to find out how a product works is by consumer reviews, and we've scoured user reviews of many facial serums and narrowed down the list to the 9 highest reviewed serums, each $30 or under. Here they are in no particular order.

1. Boots No7: Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum

Boots No7: Protect and Perfect Intense Beauty SerumImage courtesy Pricegrabber

Boots No7: Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum was tested independently for 12 months and showed definite positive skin changes in many who participated in the trial. 70% saw improvement on their photo-aged skin in those 12 months and wrinkles were reduced by up to 50% in 4 weeks.

Actual consumers who reviewed the product noted positive changes and super-smooth skin after just weeks of using it. Real changes with fine lines and wrinkles were noted by many to be most noticeable after 2 months of use. Apply this serum to your skin morning and night after washing. This product won a Good Housekeeping Anti-Aging Award in 2010.

2. Olay Regenerist: Daily Regenerating Serum

Olay Regenerist: Daily Regenerating SerumImage courtesy PriceGrabber

Olay Regenerist takes a different approach than exfoliating serums which quickly turn over top layers of skin bringing fresh new layers to the surface. Regenerist uses amino-peptides which help renew the outer layer of your skin gently.

Reviewers note smooth skin, slight reduction in fine lines and wrinkles and smaller pores. It's also noted that people in the oily to combination skin category have given this serum positive reviews. But note, if you dislike fragrance, pick up the unscented bottle, as many reviewers commented on this strong fragrance in this serum. Daily Regenerating Serum received an Allure Editor's Choice Award.

3. Burt's Bees: Naturally Ageless Serum

Burt's Bees Naturally Ageless Serum is a great choice for those looking for a gentle, natural approach to anti-aging. The active ingredients in this serum are Pomegranate, Evening Primrose and Borage Oils which give the serum antioxidant potency and hydration to your skin.

Reviewers noted an all-around positive change in skin's texture and appearance, though some did note it was a bit too greasy for their already oil-prone skin. But for those who fall in the dry skin category and are looking for overall healthier skin, this is a great product to add to your morning routine.

4. Roc: Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum

Roc: Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle SerumImage courtesy PriceGrabber

Roc: Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum is great for those looking to diminish fine lines and wrinkles. Roc anti-aging products always get top reviews from beauty editors and consumers alike. This serum contains Retinol, which speeds up your skin's cell turnover, bring fresh new skin cells to the surface. It also contains ingredients to tone and tighten the skin, which makes it great for those who are losing tone in their skin due to aging.

Many of the consumers who used and reviewed this serum saw what was promised - reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, better skin tone and some noted their sun spots lightened tremendously.

5. Avalon Organics: Vitamin C Vitality Facial Serum

Looking for a brighter complexion? Try Avalon Organics Vitamin C Vitality Facial Serum. Vitamin C is widely used in anti-aging products because it is an antioxidant that helps your skin fend off free-radicals which cause aging signs. According to Avalon Organics, this serum will help boost collagen and elastin production, stimulate cell renewal and increase healthy circulation.

Reviewers note that it's not necessarily the best choice if you want to get rid of deep wrinkles or fine lines, but if you're looking to help give your skin an inner makeover and you're looking healthy, glowing skin, it fits that bill. And also good to know, reviewers note how wonderful this citrus-scented serum smells.

6. Derma E: DMAE Alpha Lipoic C-Ester Serum

Derma E: DMAE Alpha Lipoic C-Ester Serum is a good serum option if you are looking for skin-tightening results. The most note-worthy ingredients in the bottle are Alpha Lipoic Acid and DMAE (Dimethyl MEA). Alpha Lipoic Acid is potent anti-oxidant and DMAE is a known skin toning ingredient. Both of these ingredients can be found in serums that cost much more than Derma E's serum, priced at the time of this review at only $22.50.

Reviewers noted a reduction in redness, lightening of age spots and sun damage and overall brighter skin tone.

7. Kiss My Face: Ester C Serum

Kiss My Face: Ester C Serum is again a good choice for those maybe in their 30's who are looking to give an overall makeover to their skin, yet, not quite looking for the deep wrinkle repair that they'd get in Roc's serum.

Ester C Serum contains skin soothing aloe and Ester C which is a multi-tasking ingredient that is known for its ability to lighten skin discolorations, reduce fine lines and build collagen. Ester C is also a great anti-oxidant.

Reviewers most noted skin tone improvement, reduction in blotchy skin and a reduction in pore size. Those with oily skin liked the light hydration that came from using this serum and some felt it enough moisturizing for their skin.

8. Beauty Without Cruelty: Vitamin C Vitality Serum

Beauty Without Cruelty's Vitamin C Vitality Serum contains both Vitamin C and Co Q10 which will help brighten your skin and improve your skin's texture and clarity. It also contains Vitamin E and A which are anti-oxidants that will, with regular use, fend off free-radicals which cause aging signs.

Consumers who reviewed this product noted overall positive changes in their skin's texture and were hooked. It's important to note that some reviewers with very sensitive skin didn't do well with this product. A few reviewers tried mixing this directly to their moisturizer to tone down the potency a bit, and while it did work for some, if you have very sensitive skin, we'd recommend trying another serum.

9. L'Oreal Paris Youth Code Regenerating Skincare Serum

L'Oreal Paris Youth Code Regenerating Skincare SerumImage courtesy PriceGrabber

The word on the street about L'Oreal Paris' Youth Code Serum is that it is almost identical, but even better than its daughter company, Lancome's much more expensive product, Genifique. In fact, one reviewer had been using Genifique for years before trying Youth Code and she's amazed at the results and is happy to be saving the extra money.

Youth Code Regenerating Serum claims to help reduce signs of stress, fatigue and aging and many reviewers state it does just that. Reviews of diminished lines, especially around the eyes, were plenty. Also a fresher, brighter complexion was seen by many and overall younger skin was noted as well.

Epilady Legend Review

The Bottom Line

Epilady Legend is a fine machine to remove hair between waxing or instead of shaving. It’s newly designed and less painful than the older model.

Pros

  • Tweezes the entire hair, including the root
  • Cordless design makes it easy to handle
  • Not as painful as you might think
  • Can be used in multiple areas

Cons

  • Left thin, fine hair behind
  • Can fall into a million pieces if dropped
  • Takes awhile to remove hair from each body part

Description

  • Manufacturer: Epilady
  • Usage: Hair removal
  • Average Price: $59.99
  • Options: In blue and gold

Guide Review - Epilady Legend

I was told that I was going to be receiving the Epilady Legend to review and I tried everything to get someone else to use it. I even offered to pay a client and if she didn't like it, I would wax her for free for a year. She denied me and laughed. "Have fun!" were the last words out of her mouth.

I immediately handed it to my husband and told him to try it or he wouldn't get a home cooked meal for a week. He put it up to his arm and turned it on, then whined like a baby for a second and turned it off.

I was stuck trying it for myself. I read the directions and headed off to the bathroom. I took a hot shower and got ready to meditate myself into a state of being where I felt no pain. I lifted the baby blue and white torture device in my hand and turned it on. I placed it against my leg and ….

Not too bad. No pain, just an annoyance while the tweezers pulled the hair from the follicle. Just as I was getting into the rhythm of it- crash! It slipped out of my hand and fell onto the tile floor. It seemed to be a slow motion film as I watched the Epilady dismantle itself. First the cover flew off. Then, silver and white plastic everywhere! The entire guts of the epilator fell apart.

I had to wait to get the new one. This time, I was going to beat it. I went into the bathroom and just went for it. Before I knew it, I had removed hair from my legs, my underarms and my bikini line. Yes, I gave myself a Brazilian with the Epilady. Crazy? Maybe, but it worked and it worked well. After the initial annoying sting, it was fine. I am not going to say it was pain free but no worse than waxing. The only downfall was it did take much longer than if I had just gone to get waxed. Nonetheless, it worked.

I did notice that the finer hair was not as easy to remove. I had to go over the area a few times to make sure I got each and every hair. I also had some breakage of the hair above the skin. I noticed this happened when I was hurrying and going too fast.

Mystic Tan

The Bottom Line

It is natural to want a golden tan in the summer, even if logically we know that a tan is basically just sun damage. Here is an option to get that look without getting the damaging rays. While this can look great on some, it doesn't always come out as suggested.

(And don't just take my word for it - Read all of the reviews that have been sent in!)

Pros

  • Very fast head to toe application.
  • UV -Free - safe for your skin
  • Streak free in comparison to rub on creams (if you use the barrier cream properly).
  • Fantastic instructions from the employee working.

Cons

  • If you're claustrophobic, you may have an issue with the booth (I did).
  • If you don't apply the barrier cream properly, you'll have funny looking hands and feet.
  • In my salon, the TV was broken, so I was unable to watch the instructional video.
  • Pricey if you want to continue your tan through Mystic Tan.

Description

  • A UV-Free tanner that takes only seconds to apply.
  • Mystic Tanning Salons provide a barrier cream for your nails and palms of your hands.
  • When you're ready, you activate the booth by pushing a green button.
  • Starting in the front, the mist is applied for about 15 seconds on each side of you with a pause to warn you to turn around.
  • When finished, you dry off starting at your feet and working up.
  • Tan lasts for a good 4 to 7 days.
  • Not recommended if you are planning to go in chlorine or salt water because of streaking.
  • Make sure to exfoliate very well the day before tanning for best results.

Guide Review - Mystic Tan Review

I informed the woman that I was new to Mystic Tan, and that I wanted to give it a try. She told me that the mandatory instructional video was unavailable due to a broken TV, but she promised to show me everything, so away we went. Because I was a new customer, I got a two-for-one deal on my tan. The woman working, a regular Mystic tanner, was fantastic at telling me exactly what to do (and what not to do), and showed me everything right in the booth.

First, I got completely undressed (swimsuit is optional) and put on a hair net making sure to leave a hair line out. I then applied the barrier cream to my finger and toe nails, palms of my hands and in between my toes. When I stepped into the booth, I stood on an oval, bent my arms so my palms were not facing the spray and pushed a green button to activate the machine. This is the part where I sort of freaked out. I'm not good with small spaces, or the idea of not being able to breath. About five seconds after I pushed the button, the mist began. After spraying my front for about 15 seconds (and a momentary freak-out which resulted in me breathing in a full breath of tanner), it paused and I turned around making sure my palms were in front of my stomach. Another 15 seconds on my back and it was done. I hopped out and quickly dried myself off. I was almost dry actually, but they instructed me to start drying at my feet and work my way up. Immediately I could tell that I had a bit of a glow. I was instructed not to shower for at least 4 hours.

After eight hours, my body was pretty much an fake tan mess, despite giving myself a great exfoliation the day before. I also applied a light lotion the day I went so I didn't have any very dry patches. My face was by far the worst.

Don't make a rash decision and just show up, follow our first two Self-Tanning Tips and prepare your skin first.

Vaniqa Hair Removal Cream

Vaniqa is a prescription facial hair removal cream for women. This product isn't an instant remedy like the hair removal cream you might be thinking of, like Nair, where you apply, let it do its job for a couple minutes and then wipe off the hair. Vaniqa is actually supposed to prevent women's facial hair from growing.

Jen Adkins, the Skincare Guide has been using the cream for the past couple weeks and will be reporting on her results (I'll keep you posted). In the meantime, check out her Vaniqa info sheet to get the low-down on this product. And if you have tried it, she's also asking for your review.

The BB Cream Craze

I'm packing my bags and headed to South Korea in a few days and one of the first things I want to check out is BB cream.? BB cream is one of the hottest beauty products in South Korea and we're starting to see a few popping up in the USA (Like Clinique's), but most people still don't really know what BB cream is.

BB stands for blemish balm, and it is a multitasking beauty tool that apparently moisturizes, covers up like a foundation and protects against the sun.? It is said to be an? anti-wrinkle, anti-acne, skin whitening, scar lightener. WOW!

I am told that K-drama stars and the K-pop singers share their love of BB cream, so you can bet that I'm going to be checking it out when I go.? I've also been told that the official Korean BB cream that they sell on Amazon and other online sites are counterfeit, so I'm going to get the real deal.

Here are two fun blog posts about BB Cream

When I get home, I will share how BB Cream worked for my skin.? If you've tried it, share in the comments.

Brazilian Waxing for Men

Bikini and Brazilian waxing for men is in the top three areas for hair removal. There are also many different ideas as to what the service entails and their names. Here are some examples of styles available for this type of service and why you should seek out a professional.
  1. BSC (back, sack, crack). This is exactly as it sounds. Although the back is not part of the Brazilian, the sack and crack can be. The hair is removed from the area between the buttocks and from the scrotum. This is done carefully and with professionalism and there's no need to be shy or worried as long as you are dealing with a professional who is experienced.
  2. Bikini line. This is the same like for women. If you had a bikini type bottom on, picture all the hair that shows around the edges gone. It's much less invasive than the above-mentioned waxing but still leaves quite a bit of hair.
  3. Strip and bikini (with clipping down the front). Basically this is the same as the bikini but more hair is removed and a landing strip is left. Generally the hair is also trimmed down to about a ? of an inch.
  4. The full Brazilian- This is the works. You can expect all genital hair removed. And I mean everything. From front to back (yes, your behind) you will be hair free. You may want to consider getting your actual back done as well if it's very hairy, for a seamless flow.

Of course you don't have to choose just one style. You can customize your bikini wax to include exactly how much hair you want to keep and be removed.

Going to the Pros

I highly recommend going to a licensed and trained individual who has worked on men for some time. Ask around to find the best of the best. You can expect professionalism, cleanliness and no embarrassment from someone who knows what they are doing.

At Home?

Trying this yourself at home will probably be a disaster. You will leave yourself open to bruising and ingrown hair because you probably will not be able to get the correct angles to remove the hair properly. You can also burn yourself and cause blisters, especially on your genitals.

There may be a few of you who have mastered the art of waxing yourself but for most it will be one of the hardest things to do on your own. And who wants to walk around with wax in places because they couldn't reach around to remove it! Leave this to a professional and enjoy a little pampering and a couple of hair free weeks.

Our latest review is of Burt's Bees: Naturally Ageless Hydrating Night Creme, a night cream best suited for those with dry skin looking to minimize the early signs of aging, including fine lines and wrinkles.

The product is almost all natural (98.99% ) and is available at most drugstores nation-wide.? Mary-Ellen Kramer purchased this and wrote a review for us.? Small Eyebrow Wax Applicators

eyebrow applicators, eyebrow waxing, eyebrow shaping

It can be scary and dangerous to wax your own eyebrows. Not only are you putting warm gooey stuff near your eyes, but getting it to go exactly where you want (so you still have eyebrows left) can be a challenge for the less experienced.

When I saw these, Suddenly Smooth Contour Wax Applicators (compare prices), I thought what a great idea. They are smaller than the regular applicators made for eyebrows out there, with one end rounded and the other pointed. The petite size and tip help you have more control to get the wax only where you want it- therefore only remove the hairs you want gone.

If using warm wax scares you but you want to do your own shaping without tweezers, try a cold wax or wax strips.

Women Art of Shaving Review

The Bottom Line

The perfect example of "you get what you pay for". Although pricey for a shaving cream, it gives you an ultra-close shave, leaving skin glowing, moisturized and soft.

Compare Prices

Pros

  • Made with rose oils for a light, amazing scent
  • Moisturizing to skin
  • No parabens
  • Gives an extraordinary close shave

Cons

  • Expensive for a shaving cream

Description

  • Manufacturer – The Art of Shaving
  • Usage – Shaving Cream
  • Options – Only one shaving cream for women
  • Average Cost - $26.00

Guide Review - The Art of Shaving Cream for Women

Rose is one of my favorite scents. And this isn’t the fake rose perfume scent your smell at the drugstore, The Art of Shaving cream for women contains a special blend of 100% rose absolute and rose oil. One of the most feminine smelling shaving creams, it’s almost intoxicating.

When I first tried the shaving cream I got a little carried away and put too much on, it’s very concentrated as a little goes a long way. The cream is a very rich consistency, a combination of butter and a thick gel.

So it smells wonderful and is thick and creamy, how well does it work? You’re suggested to use the cream with a shaving brush to help lift the hairs, but I don’t own one. Even with shaving brush less, I got a super-duper close shave with The Art of Shaving cream for women. And even more amazing my skin was so soft, moisturized and was glowing like it had a facial.

Sometimes my underarms will get an ingrown hair or two, but I haven’t been greeted with any since using the shaving cream. Special ingredients used in their formulation to help to avoid ingrown hairs must really work.

The Art of Shaving, as their name contends holds up to their products. They have shaving down to an art, and a science.

New from Schick: Hydro Silk Razor

When I was in high school, I didn't want to spend any of my own money on something as silly as a razor, so I used my dad's single blade cheapies.? They were horrible and gave me such razor burn.? I remember talking to my friend about razor burn and she told me she was using a triple blade razor. I was so impressed! I laugh at that memory now. If you're using cheapies, it's time to see what's out there.

I've been using Schick's Hydro Silk razor for a couple of weeks and I love it so much I wanted to share it with you. (Five blades, baby!) It has a row of little dots of moisturizing serum on the top and the bottom of the blades.? The serum reacts with the water which helps the blade glide over your skin.? I haven't even needed to use shaving cream at all.? We recommend making sure your razor is stored out of the water otherwise the little dots of serum will wash away.

Schick says the razor will leave your skin moisturized for two full hours after shaving, and that may be, but we still recommend putting on a body lotion or oil after shaving.? Visit Schick's website for more info.
