12 Cheap Beauty Products - \$10
What to Expect- Pro Brow Wax
An upscale salon or spa will lead you into a private room onto a facial bed where you will lay down, and they will wrap hair in a towel or push it back with a head band. A bright facial and magnifying light will be turned on to see the brows closely. Some salons that mostly specialize in hair services, simply clip hair back and do the waxing at the shampoo bowl.
Professional Eyebrow Waxing Consultation
At this time they should consult with you on how you want your eyebrows shaped. Do you like them full and defined, just cleaned up, or a large arch? (See eyebrow styles.) The technician should never just start waxing at away at your brows without knowing what you want your brows to look like. The Waxing & Shaping
If needed, your brows will be trimmed with scissors. Don't be scared and think they are taking your entire brows away. The excess bulk that's removed makes for a much cleaner look. They will cleanse your eyebrow area, apply powder and then the warm wax and strip (for soft wax). When hardened, it's ripped off quickly. Your first wax will probably hurt a bit, but will get better each time. The hair underneath, in the middle of brows and on top (if you wish) will be removed.
Post-Wax
Wax cleanser will remove any residue, and a skin soother helps calm skin and ease redness. Any tiny hairs that were missed by the wax will be cleaned up with tweezers to fine-tune the brows. The technician will then give you a mirror so you can see how your brows look. If they were shaped too thin, unfortunately there's not much you can do but use an eyebrow pencil until they grow back in. But, if they are too thick then ask the technician to make them thinner.
If you like the way they're shaped, make a standing appointment. Your brows will always look great, and never over-grown.
FAQ - Serums and Toners
Question: Do I Need to Use a Serum and Toner Daily?
From Juliana: I am 22 years old and I am trying to figure out a good skincare regimen. I went to Sephora and they suggested that I use a toner and serum.
I have normal skin, sometimes a little dry, and I have never heard of serum and was wondering if a toner and serum were things that I should be using. And if I should, what products you would recommend.
Let's start with toners. A toner is a product that you use after you wash your face. It is a liquid that you apply with a cotton ball. There are many different toners: some used to reduce oil on your skin (often called astringents) and those that do not contain oil-stripping oil. Definitely stay away from astringents with your skin type.
The verdict on toners tends to be that they are not necessary to use daily. In fact, many experts think they can be a waste of time and money if you are using a product that cleans your face well.
Personally, I use a toner. I have combination skin, and when I use a toner, I feel my pores look smaller, and my skin gets a little extra pampering. But, it's also habit for me. For your skin, I think you can easily skip the toner if you're using a good face wash.
On to serums. First, see my explanation of moisturizers verses serums.
Serums go deeper into the skin's layers than moisturizers. Often they are good for brightening treatments, anti-aging treatments and sometimes acne treatments, none of which it sounds like you need. Serums are also great for people with very oily skin, as they can use them as their moisturizer.
Because you are only 22, I think that if you have overall healthy clear skin, I'd recommend you stick with a good facial cleanser, exfoliator and moisturizer with SPF in it. You can add on extra skin care steps as you desire, such as masks or other treatment products.
As for product recommendations, here's what I'd suggest for your age and normal to dry skin. Since you're already shopping at Sephora, I'll pick products you can find there: Bliss products.
For Cleansing, try using the Fabulous Foaming Face Wash. (buy direct). Sometimes foaming cleansers can be drying, but this product works great with normal skin, and doesn't ever leave a tight dry feeling.
For a moisturizer, I'd recommend using Bliss: Best of Skintentions (buy direct) which blocks against UVA and UVB rays. (At your age, sunscreen is the number one most important thing to fend off signs of aging!)
Tips for Bushy Eyebrows
Question: Help! I Have Bushy Eyebrows
Be Careful
If you’re a man, you definitely don’t want to take a lot of hair out, otherwise you can risk looking feminine. A woman can remove more hair than a man, but still has to be careful. Otherwise her brows can be too thin for her face, not make the right sized frame for her eyes, and make her look outdated or aged.Try This First
The first thing to do before removing hair is to trim them (get how-to guide). This helps remove the excess bulk, keeps the brows in place, makes them appear lighter- and yes- less bushy. After this bulk is removed, you'll be able to see more clearly what hair, if any, needs to be removed.Fine Tuning
Sometimes trimming is enough for teens and men, often women need to do a little more work for bushy eyebrows. We have a shaping step-by-step (see instructions) for women that shows you where your brows should start, end and where to place the arch. For men we have a grooming guide that helps you tune up your brows (get instructions), and still look like a guy. Whether you are a man or a woman, remember to start out slow, you can always remove more as you go along.Define Brows with Threading

Neutrogena Sport Face Sunblock
I am a runner. I've been looking for a good facial sunscreen that will work even while I'm sweating.
After I bought and used Neutrogena's Sport Face Sunblock Lotion SPF 70+ for one of my races, I knew I had to share my less-than-stellar results with you.
Neutrogena: Ultimate Sport Sunblock Lotion SPF 70+ - Duo Package
Before my road race over the weekend, I was in the market for a sunblock that would work well. My skin is extremely fair and sensitive. I knew the sun was going to be strong that day so I was looking for a strong sunscreen that would get the job done.
I needed a product that would still block the sun even though I would be sweating a lot. Right there at Walgreens, I saw my answer. There was a 4.0 oz tube of "Neutrogena Ultimate Sport Sunblock Lotion".
What got my attention was the sleek shiny silver packaging paired with the word "Sport". This seemed like it might be something that would work well during a road race.
It listed the following:
- SPF of 70+
- broad spectrum UVA-UVB
- contained Helioplex
- ultra sweat proof and waterproof
- defend, restore, recharge, breathable clean feel
- won't clog pores or cause breakouts
- Oil free and PABA free
- #1 Dermatologist recommended sun care
These were all of the qualities I was looking for in a sunblock.
Attached to the 4 oz. tube was a smaller 1 oz. trial tube of Neutrogena Sport Face. It also said it had an SPF of 70. The fact that they had a separate product for your face made me think that the larger tube was not a good match for my face and that I should use the smaller trial sized tube for that.
Using Neutrogena: Ultimate Sport and Sport Face Sunblock Lotion SPF 70+
Both tubes contained product that was light weight, easy to apply, and non greasy. It also had an extremely light scent.
I dabbed a few drops of the "Sport Face" to my face and rubbed it in until I felt my face was thoroughly covered. I used the bigger tube on the rest of my body. I did all of this an hour before I was in the sun. The race lasted about 35 minutes, and I stuck around for another 30 minutes or so. In total, I was in the sun for approximately 2 hours.
During the road race, my face began to sweat and the sunblock ran into my eyes. This stung my eyes very badly and I could not see clearly for the rest of the race.
Also, after the race, I was left with a burn on my face, mostly my forehead. It seems that the Sport Face product could not withstand my sweat. The Ultimate Sport Body Sunscreen worked on other areas of my body and I did not burn elsewhere.
Upon closer inspection, the "Sport Face" tube does not say "ultra sweat proof" or "water proof" like the larger tube does. However, to me, that was implied since it was packaged with the larger tube and also had the word "Sport" in its description.
I can testify that the Ultimate Sport Sunblock Lotion took good care of my skin, leaving me with no burn. The Sport Face Sunblock resulted in burning and stinging; two things you want to avoid when running a race.
My quest for a really good sunblock that is actually waterproof and will not sting my eyes goes on.
Natural Glow Express
The Bottom Line
Jergens Natural Glow Express is perfect to use before a vacation or day at the beach to get an all over natural tan fast. While you will still experience the self-tanner smell, it's not as strong as the original formula is.
Pros
- You'll get a full shade of color in only three days.
- Along with great color, you'll get super hydration with the thick, body butter like consistency.
- Gradual tans means less chance that you'll be full of streaks.
Cons
- 4oz for $7.99 vs. Jergens Original Natural Glow: 7.5 oz for $6.99. Fewer ounces for more money.
- Unfortunately science hasn't created a great smelling self-tanner, but it's not too overpowering.
- No option for very pale skin.
Description
- A thick and creamy three day self-tanning moisturizer.
- Use as a boost to give a quick tan and then maintain color with the original Jergens Natural Glow.
- Comes in two color options: Medium and Medium/Tan.
- 4 ounces for $7.99
Guide Review - Jergens: Natural Glow Express
Basically a booster for Jergens Original Natural Glow, you use Natural Glow Express for up to three days to get a quick tan. Many reviewers with pale skin said that two days is perfect for a natural looking color. Once you have your desired tan, you maintain your color with the original Jergens Natural Glow. Reviews are falling in and they all are commenting on the realistic tan color; no orange skin. Unlike usual self-tanners which always disappoint us with their claim to hydrate while adding color, this product really does what it says. Its thick moisturizing consistency reminds us of body butter and really does leave your skin super soft. Make sure you exfoliate your skin prior to application. Some people prefer to add a base moisturizer to their body before they apply the self-tanner to make application easier.
There are only 4 ounces of product in this container for $7.99 vs. the original formula which has 7.5 ounces for $6.99. However, with a faster forming tan, you will need less product. One thing that very pale complexion reviewers noticed was the lack of a "light" formula, however, when people gave the medium color a try, they thought it was a great natural looking tan.
Scent is always an issue with self-tanners, and unfortunatley I can't see it changing any time soon due to the scent coming from the ingredient that causes the color, DHA. If you apply before bed, making sure you allow yourself time to dry before you crawl under the sheets, by morning, and after a good shower gel, the scent should be very weak.
As someone with fair skin, this is going to be a staple in my cabinet. I need all the help that I can get when it comes to color.
Homemade Hair Removal
Question: Do You Have Any Homemade Hair Removal Recipes?
Many people prefer sugaring over waxing because it’s gentler to the skin and doesn’t hurt as much because there's less sticking to the skin- so there’s less pulling than waxing. Another bonus is that you can remove the sugar with plain old water to clean skin when you’re done removing your hair, it’s water soluble.
Homemade Hair Removal Recipe
Our recipe (get instructions) guides you step-by-step with pictures to making your own sugaring mixture for hair removal at home. When you’re finished and it cools, you can use it as a paste to remove hair as short as 1/16” without the use of any strips. You can also heat up the sugar mixture and use it as a gel, in a hair removal process done similarly to waxing. It’s an easier technique, but you’ll need at least 1/4" of hair growth and a bit more items like strips and applicators. How to Shave Back Hair
"When asked in confidence, the women surveyed ranked back as the number one area of their man's body they desired to see smooth. (77 percent)." So reports the book Mantalk by Elliot Jacobs, MD. (Read more findings at Mensfashion.about.com)
While a lot guys do make an appointment and get their backs waxed to please themselves or others, a lot want to shave to save on money and time. Ordinarily almost anywhere would be easy with at least the basics, a razor and shaving cream. But how can a guy reach their entire back with those tools alone? Unless they're extraordinarily limber with really long arms, they can't.
So get a helper and browse our tips to make the job easier for them (read how-to) or choose one of the diy back shaving tools on the market and keep that grooming secret to yourself.

Clarins: Bright Plus Peel
The Bottom Line
Clarins: Bright Plus HP Brightening Peel is easy to use, and gives very noticeable results, however my big problem is the lack of complete instructions. The bottle only tells you how to apply the product, and you're left guessing how long to leave it on, and how to take it off.
Pros
- Amount of product - 4.2 ounces is enough for many peels
- Easy to use
- Gives fantastic results (if left on for long enough)
- Gives a clear "Sun Burn Alert"
Cons
- Instructions are lacking and need more details
Description
- AHA Peel that can be used in combination with Clarins: Bright Plus HP Intensive Clear Mask, or alone.
- Gently exfoliates dull skin leaving your skin brighter.
- Retail value: $42
Guide Review - Clarins: Bright Plus HP Brightening Peel
I am a huge fan of alpha hydroxy acid (or AHA) exfoliators. They couldn't be easier to use, and you'll likely get more uniformed results compared to a grainy scrub. What I first about Clarins Bright Plus HP Brightening Peel was the large bottle with 4.2 ounces of product. The consistency is a bit thicker than water, but not by much. You can imagine that you don't need much to soak a cotton ball, so the cost-per-application makes it a great value.
I made sure to read the directions so I wouldn't leave it on too long, but when I looked on the back, it only told me how to apply it, and not how long I was supposed to leave it on my face, or how I was supposed to get it off of my face. It did read, "see insert", but how often do you throw away the box and directions only to forget what it said.
Unfortunately, that's exactly what I did, but I found more info on Clarins website. You can use this in combination with the Bright Plus Intensive Clear Mask, or apply every other night to a clean face and remove with a toner before applying your night moisturizer.
You can see that instructions still aren't clear on how long to leave the peel on. Here's what I do, and I've been extremely pleased with the results. I washed my face, and then apply the product to a cotton round and apply to my entire face and neck. I leave it on for about five to seven minutes before soaking another pad with my toner to remove. Then, I moisturize as usual. (After publishing this review, my Clarins contact suggested that we leave it on for about 10 minutes before rinsing off with a toner. Easy enough!)
I really could tell the results after using this; my face was much smoother and softer, and it just looked revived. I used this when I felt my skin was a bit dull and it completely took that feeling away. It's an easy product to fit into your regime.
Sally Hansen Hair Removal Creme
The Bottom Line
I loved this easy to use pump action hair removal creme! Okay, I wouldn’t consider the scent pure, but it was one of the simplest products to use and kept my legs smooth for four days.
Pros
- Does the job well
- Easy to use
Cons
- The smell is not that pure!
Description
- Manufacturer: Sally Hansen
- Usage: Hair removal creme
- Options: For body and face
Guide Review - Sally Hansen Pure Scent-sation Hair Removal Creme for Body
The box looked like the well-known Sally Hansen orange and white box. I opened it up and found a convenient pump inside. Wow, a simple and easy way to get the product out of the container. And easy it was.
I used this product on my legs. I have coarse, thick hair and I do not like shaving. I wax. But I really wanted to give this product a try since I don't always have the time to go for my waxing and I really don't want to shave every day.
I applied a generous amount of product on my legs and waited for three minutes on my right leg before I began to remove the product. I had no burning or stinging and although I didn't care for the smell, it was tolerable. I removed the product and noticed that I still had some hair that was hanging on for dear life.
After about four and a half minutes, I removed the hair removal creme from my left leg. This leg was left completely hairless and smooth. I did not feel and stinging or burning even though I left it on a little longer.
I noticed that the hair seemed to be gone from under my skin. No five o'clock shadow from a lazy shaving job on my gams! My skin felt moisturized and not tight like some creams leave your skin feeling.
The best part about it, I didn't have to shave for four days. That is a record for my Italian legs. I actually enjoyed using Sally Hansen Pure Scent-Sation Hair Removal Creme. The bottle gave me three applications on both legs.
