Threading Instructor Interview

Is it hard to learn threading? Not for Anna, she used to be dedicated to the popular waxing until completely awestruck by an eyebrow threading six years ago in college. But threading changed her life in more than just getting a great eyebrow shape, she wanted to learn more.

An extraordinary opportunity arrived. A local esthetics school had a student that was a threading expert from India, and taught Anna the hair removal technique using string. So along with working her full-time job, she started offering threading from home.

Business exploded much more than Anna had anticipated, and was spending little time with her family. But instead of taking threading entirely out of her life, she turned to teaching the ancient hair removal method, and now has her own company Hair Bare Threading.

Threading looks like it would be very hard to learn, how much of a challenge was getting the technique down for you?

Threading is actually much easier than it looks. When I was learning how to thread, I learned how to hold the thread and how to remove the hair by the end of the class. If you can learn how to tie a pair of shoes you can most definitely learn how to thread. I have taught all sorts of women, from stay at home moms to estheticians, so anybody can do this.

Now that you teach threading, how long is your class and what exactly do you teach?

My class is exactly one hour long. I teach what type of thread should be used, two different methods the thread can be held, how to thread different areas of the face, and a practicum near the end. I want to give my students the confidence in knowing that they can do it too!

How long of practicing would you say it would take someone to be able to do threading on clients?

It would definitely depend on the person, but I would say if one dedicates themselves to practicing on themselves first and then friends and family, then it should only take a couple of weeks. Personally, I found that with each person I practiced on I gained more and more confidence with each passing day. As I built up my confidence, I began to gain speed in threading as well.

Can someone that does waxing expand their clientele if they begin to offer threading as well?

Most definitely! I have even instructed nail technicians that have chosen to add threading to their existing salons. More and more salons are realizing that there is a huge demand for threading because of all it's huge benefits. When I used to offer my threading services a lot of my clientele were women that had never tried threading before, but were very curious to try it. So I strongly believe if you add options like these to an existing salon that it can only serve as an advantage, especially with threading gaining so much popularity.

What do you like the most about threading?

You mean I have to pick just one thing, (laughs)? Well, I would have to say that even now, as a professional threader I still find it fascinating to watch because it looks like art while it's being done.
