Ever wonder what Ice Road Truckers: Lisa Kelly's favorite beauty products are? Or how she finds time to look so beautiful when she's out with the men in her career as a trucker? I had a chance to ask Lisa Kelly just that. Read along as Lisa Kelly talks about how she got into her profession, what her idea of real beauty is and how it differs from inside the truck to relaxing at home.
Let’s hear it for girly-girls who can be tough-girls, too! As a girl who’s dad was a truck driver growing up, I can’t, even for a second say that I ever thought about doing it myself. Tell me about your decision to choose a career path as a trucker? My parents were in the medical field and I decided that I didn’t want to do that. In the process of trying to figure out what I liked, I started delivering pizzas and realized that I really liked driving.
I walked into Carlile and asked them ‘do you want to hire me?’ and they agreed. From there, I started with small trucks and worked my way up to what I am doing now.
The obvious thing people see what they look at you is your beauty – you don’t fit the mold as a trucker. Let’s talk about your beauty regimen. Are you just lucky, or do you take time to take really good care of your skin? When it gets really cold in Alaska, my skin can get really dry. I am a huge fan of Aveeno Lotion. It seems to keep the moisture in a lot longer than some of the other brands. I’m also a huge fan of Proactiv. I’ve tried everything and it definitely works the best.
How does your beauty regimen change when you’re out on the road vs. being at home? Getting girly and putting effort into my appearance is something that I enjoy at home, where I’m a woman for my man. Any other time, I’m just out playing. I’ve always been a tomboy.
What kind of beauty products do you like to buy - drugstore products or splurge-worthy products? I’m a trucker, not a model. I’m definitely a drugstore product girl. It’s the most convenient when I’m on the road. I buy things that are necessities like Chapstick Classic, Secret deodorant and anti-frizz shampoo like Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny line. If I can get it at Walmart or Target, then I am set.
Can you share a few of your favorite must-have beauty products?
- Chapstick Classic Original: I use this and rely on this all the time. It’s the best thing when you’re on the road in Alaska. I can’t go anywhere without it.
- Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing Lotion: The air in Alaska is extremely dry. I put this lotion all over my body, and I’ve found it to be the only product that actually keeps me moisturized.
- Secret Hypoallergenic Deodorant: I hate smells. They give you a headache – like I need another headache when I’m on the road! All you need is deodorant and this works the best while I’m constantly on the go.
- Benefit Rush Hour Lipstick: I got this lipstick at a photo shoot and I love it. The color is really pretty and its name suits my lifestyle!
- Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Line: My hair is naturally frizzy. When I straighten my hair, these products really help to keep everything in place during a day on the road.
- Proactiv: I tried everything and this really is the only product that works. My skin looks great.
- TIGI Bedhead Straightener: For something you can buy at Walmart, these hair straighteners really do the job.
If we gave you $100, what new-to-you beauty products would be first on your list to buy? In Alaska, we don’t have access to fancy beauty products. I would buy more of what I know works!
What advice would you give to a woman who wanted to do as you did - pick a male-focused career path – without losing herself and her beauty along the way? Be secure in who you are. Don’t go in and try to change the system. Instead, put your own little twist on things.
Expect a lot of people to tell you that you can’t do something, but know that you can achieve anything if that’s what you want. Know who you are and what you want out of every situation – that’s what will keep you going.
